“Think you were going to marry Lana? If she hadn’t been so conniving, would you have eventually proposed?”
“No.”
“Are you afraid that I’ll want that from you?”
He stared down at me, his hand coming up to cradle my cheek. “Do you? Want that?”
“You offering?” I teased, knowing he couldn’t possibly be serious. Moving to London with him was one thing. Marriage was another.
His eyes were open and so blue. “What if I am?”
Chapter 28
“It’s too soon to be talking like that,” I evaded, not knowing how to respond to him. I wasn’t ready to put my heart out there—not all the way.
“I’ll take that second drink now,” I said.
Flynn leaned down and brushed his lips against mine. I pressed into him, giving him permission to kiss me again.
“Stop,” he commanded. “Or we might have to find a coatroom.”
“You’re wearing a kilt,” I said. “Easy access.”
He sighed. “Pure trouble.”
“Thank you.”
“Champagne?”
“I’d prefer something stronger.”
“Right. You don’t like champagne. Don’t move from this spot. It will be impossible to find you otherwise.”
“If you can’t find me, I’ll be in the coatroom. Hide and seek.”
His eyes burned with desire, but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he turned and went in search of drinks for us. I was lost in thought, fantasizing about a coatroom sexcapade when I caught sight of Ash’s blond, elegantly coiffed head moving through the crowd. My best friend saw me and waved.
“Hello, gorgeous,” Ash said.
“Back at you. Love this.” I gestured to Ash’s dress, an aquamarine blue that highlighted her strawberries and cream complexion. “Did you bring a date?”
“Sort of,” Ash said. I looked behind her at the man approaching us. Her brother looked handsome in his tux, his face lit with a smile.
“Hey, stranger,” Jack greeted, throwing his arms around me in an exuberant hug. His lips brushed my cheek, and I could smell the liquor on his breath.
“Looks like you started the party early,” I said in a light tone.
“These things are so dull,” he said.
“Shhh,” Ash said, trying to quiet her brother. She looked at me and rolled her eyes.
“I’ve been trying to get a hold of you,” Jack said, filching four mini salmon tartlets from a passing waiter. “But you’ve been busy with your boyfriend. Where is Campbell?”
“At the bar,” I said.
“That’s where I’m headed. Can I get you two ladies anything?”
“I’m good,” Ash said. “I think you are, too.”
