My heart thudded in my ears. “Yes. I’ll go with you.”
He smiled and climbed out of bed, sauntering toward me, all arrogance and happiness. He wrapped his arms around me before gently coercing me in the direction of the bathroom.
“What do you say to a shower?” he asked.
“Is this because you want to see me naked? Or because I reek of scotch?”
“A little of both.”
After we showered, Flynn stayed for a quick cup of coffee, but he had a morning meeting. He had a lot of fires to put out what with having another woman in his employ drugged and a mob boss for an enemy. I didn’t know why Dolinsky wanted to destroy Flynn, but I guessed it had something to do with a power struggle. I tried not to think too much about it, because when I did, I tended to freak out. I’d gone from sheltered academic world to—well—the exact opposite.
Parading around in my bathrobe, I nursed a second cup of coffee and ordered room service. I had grown exceptionally lazy, and I needed to put a stop to it. After I ate, I got dressed, found a pair of dark sunglasses, and left the hotel.
Pulling out my phone, I called Ash. “You busy?”
“Not particularly.”
“Want to run errands with me?”
“Not particularly.”
I laughed. “I’m walking to your place. I’ll be there in a few.”
Twenty minutes later I was on the sidewalk outside Ash’s building, still waiting for her to make an appearance. Just when I thought I’d have to call her again to hurry her along, she exited her building. She was in full makeup, her blond hair was perfectly styled, and she was wearing high-heeled boots.
“You do realize we’re walking, right?” I asked.
“Let’s take my driver.”
“If I wanted a driver, I would’ve taken Flynn’s. I need to remember I used to do things for myself all the time.”
“Why?” she wondered.
“Why?” I repeated.
“Yeah. I mean, so what if it makes your life easier—using a driver and…”
“And ordering room service on the mornings I stay at Flynn’s and having a bodyguard.”
“You have a bodyguard?”
“I did. For a minute.” I sighed. “I got Flynn to call him off.”
“Why did you have a bodyguard in the first place?”
“Flynn’s paranoid. Wanted to ensure my safety,” I said evasively.
“That’s sweet. In a smothering sort of way.”
I bit my lip. “He asked me to go to London with him. When he opens his new hotel.”
“Wow,” she said. “That’s big.”
“Yeah.”
“Do you love him?”
I needed to change the subject and fast. “Did you know The Rex is thinking about starting an amateur burlesque night? I think it’s a great idea. You should perform.”
