“Because it was expected,” Flynn interjected. “So we did the opposite. And I don’t believe in long engagements.”

“He’s a man that goes after what he wants,” I said with a grin.

“How did you guys meet?” Adam asked.

“Another story for another day,” I said, wanting to get on with why Adam was here.

“Okay, let’s get started then.” He reached for his iPhone to set up the recorder.

“One thing,” I said. “This has to be anonymous. You can’t reveal who we are.”

Adam frowned. “Okay.”

“Your word.”

“My word. It’s also my career and I’m not an idiot,” he muttered.

“Well…” I teased.

“I see where this is going, so let me go ahead and put a stop to it. I’m turning on the recorder now, okay?”

“Okay.” I looked at Flynn. “You ready for this?”

“Are you?”

“No turning back now.” I leaned my head against him just for a moment. Taking a sip of water, I turned my attention back to my old college friend.

“We’re recording,” Adam said.

“Have you heard of Igor Dolinsky?” I began.

I made sure Flynn was completely asleep before I crawled out of bed. Closing the bedroom door, I crept into the living room and grabbed my phone. I dialed the number I knew by heart. He picked up on the second ring.

“Check fucking mate,” I said before hanging up.

Smiling, I got back in bed, molded myself to Flynn’s back, and fell asleep.

“Barrett.”

I moaned.

“Barrett, come on, wake up,” Flynn said.

“No. If I wake up, I’m going to have to puke, and I don’t want to puke.”

“I haveThe New York Times.”

Somehow that did it. My eyes flew open, and just like clockwork, I hauled it to the bathroom and threw up. While I brushed my teeth, Flynn read the article to me. Adam had spelled out for his readers about Dolinsky and Marino, the illegal activities of the city, the power struggles, and how it ended in death for both of them. Adam wrote that someone close to Dolinsky had murdered him, wanting to usurp his place. Adam named Fred Winters as the cause for Giovanni Marino’s death due to a botched take down. And finally, Adam blew the lid off Winters when he wrote that the FBI agent had made an arrest for Dolinsky’s murder without a warrant.

No sooner had Flynn finished reading did his cell phone ring. He went to answer it, smiling into the phone and then handing it over to me.

“Hello?”

“Barrett, Allen Masterson.”

“Hi, Allen.”

“Just wanted to let you know all the charges against you have been dropped.”
