Flynn nodded. “Whenever we have an enemy, Duncan is the one to ferret him out.”
“Dolinsky. You asked him to come here and help you with Dolinsky, didn’t you?”
“Aye.”
“Because you’re having trouble locating him. That’s where you’ve been the last few weeks. At night, I mean. Hunting him.”
“Aye,” he said again.
I shivered.
“But he’s gone so far underground even Marino hasn’t heard a whisper.”
“And you think Duncan will be able to flush him out?”
“He’s never failed. If anyone can do it, Duncan can.”
I didn’t have to ask what would happen when they finally found Dolinsky. Flynn would take down every enemy that tried to topple him from his position.
“Where did you go just now?” Flynn asked, reaching out to touch my cheek.
“Just thinking about what happens when you find him.”
“Does it bother you? What I’ll do? What I’ll have to do?”
“No.”
“No? Really?”
I sat up, not at all concerned about my nudity. Sometimes, it wasn’t skin that made you bare. “It must be hard for you to believe me, but if there’s anything you taught me it’s that life isn’t black and white. This man wants to destroy you—and to do it, he will go after everything you value. I love you. I trust you.”
Flynn’s hand reached out for mine, taking it in his firm grip. “Dolinsky and I…we’re not so different, Barrett. I will destroy everything he has, burn it to the ground, burn it all so that nothing can rise from the ashes.”
“You think I don’t know that?” I wondered. “That the man I love is capable of such things? It’s not everything you are, Flynn. There’s more to you. A lot more. I think about the moments when you hold me to you and whisper beautiful things to me, and I know I love you. All of you. All the parts of you.”
“It was a lot to hope for,” Flynn admitted. “I didn’t think I’d ever find a woman that would be able to make peace with who I really was. I didn’t look for it.”
“Hard to know what to look for when you’re not sure it exists,” I said honestly. “You took me by surprise too, Flynn.”
He grinned at me as he got out of bed. Making his way to the bathroom, he said, “So, should I have a discussion with Duncan?”
“Why would you do that?” I wondered as I followed him.
“Because I know Duncan, and he’s a bit of a lad.”
“What’s that mean?”
“He likes the ladies.”
I chuckled but then sobered. “I think you should speak with Duncan and warn him away from Ash. She’ll break his heart.”
“Hisheart? I was going to warn him not to break hers.” He drew a bath and then settled into the gargantuan tub first. I steadied myself and then eased down into the steaming water, releasing a sigh as I leaned back against the wall of his muscled chest.
“You don’t know Ash like I know Ash,” I said, tracing his leg under the water.
“Meaning?”
I debated on whether or not to tell him what I knew. Then again, if there was any man capable of withholding judgment, it was Flynn. “She cheated on her fiancé,” I said slowly.
