“I detest Tiffany’s.”
A gleam of approval showed in Lacey’s eyes. “All right then. I have another store in mind.”
I sat in the lobby of The Rex, and though the couch was comfortable, irritation made me unable to sit still. I waited for Flynn, whose back was to me, his tall, suit-clad form making me sigh in feminine appreciation. Flynn said something to the man with him, making him laugh. When Flynn turned, his eyes caught mine, and he smiled.
“Mitch Armstrong,” Flynn introduced when they were standing in front of me, “I’d like you to meet my girlfriend, Barrett Schaefer.”
I stood up, held out my hand, and attempted to slap a smile on my face. “Nice to meet you.”
“Mitch is the architect who is going to design the glass lounge on the roof.”
“I love projects like these,” Mitch confided. “Flynn is one hell of a businessman.”
“Yes, he is,” I agreed.
“I’ll call you later this week,” Mitch said to Flynn. “Barrett, great to meet you.” With one final shake of hands, Mitch Armstrong strode out of the hotel.
Flynn’s astute gaze was back on my face. “You’re upset about something.”
“Shrewd observer.”
“Would you like to speak in private?”
“Here’s fine. I won’t make a scene.”
“You look angry with me—and there are people watching. I won’t have an out-and-out fight with you in public.”
I lowered my voice when I said, “Oh, you want to have an out-and-out fight in private and then try to make up with me?”
“I prefer to think about that pleasurable hour rather than what’s about to occur. Come on.” He held out his hand to me and I took it. He used it as an excuse to bring me closer. “I missed you today.”
I raised my eyebrows. “Did you?”
Not caring that guests milled about in the lobby, along with hotel employees, he lowered his head. “I’ve been thinking about your lips. All day. Through every meeting.”
“Just my lips?” I taunted, with a hint of bite in my tone.
He grazed his mouth across my cheek, and I couldn’t stop the slight shudder that rolled through me.
“I know I’m not supposed to like you angry, but you’re an incredible sight when you are. Powerful. Like a hurricane.”
“Don’t try to flatter me,” I snapped.
He continued to hold my hand as he led me to the private elevator. After the door closed, he refused to let go even though I was attempting to tug my hand from his firm grasp. Instead, he hauled me into his side, but I was as unyielding as an iron poker.
When we walked into his suite, I whirled on him, bristling with anger. “I can’t do this, Flynn.”
“You’re not breaking up with me. I won’t allow it.”
I blinked and then shook my head. “I wasn’t going to break up with you.”
“Then what are you talking about?”
I ran a frustrated hand through my hair. “Lacey and I went shopping today.”
“I’m aware.”
“There was a man following us and when I confronted him about it, he claimed to be my bodyguard.”
