I smiled, humming in approval before returning to the blender. The addictive musk of her arousal slithered around me like a noose, immediately making me regret the decision to test those boundaries.
Because now I wanted to fuck her again.
I swallowed hard, wincing at the tightening of my jeans.
Yeah, definitely not the brightest notion I’ve ever had, I told myself.
The protein shake didn’t prove to be much of a distraction, my body strung tight with a need only Kayla could satiate.
A need I’d repressed for forty-one very long years.
It was a drop in the bucket of time for one as old as I, but it resembled an eternity to my aching cock.
Clearing my throat, I poured our drinks into two separate glasses, found a pair of straws, and handed her one of the shakes without looking at her.
“Thank you,” she whispered, the words ones I hadn’t expected to ever hear from her.
I glanced up to find her eyes on the drink, not on me, her cheeks a reddish hue that spread down her neck and disappeared beneath her leather jacket.
“You’re welcome,” I replied, the term sounding odd in the air between us.
Cordiality didn’t suit our dynamic.
But rather than fight it, I focused on my liquid lunch and cleaned up my mess.
We both finished around the same time, with Kayla surprising me by taking my cup and washing it out along with hers. When she finished, she faced me and said, “Nashville?”
I nodded.
We were both dressed similarly in boots and jeans, though my shoes cut off at the ankles and hers went up to her knees. And I wore a sweater instead of her tank top and leather jacket combo.
Weapons weren’t required for this visit, but I had my sword on me—the one I kept enchanted and invisible at all times. And I sensed that Kayla had at least two blades tucked into her knee-high boots with another at her hip.
Which meant we were ready.
I held out my hand. “Let’s go.”
She didn’t hesitate, her skin branding mine as she accepted my offer.
I engaged my ability to portal and navigated to the coordinates Zebulon had provided for the human realm.
It didn’t take long, the location closer to where the Divinity resided over the Atlantic Ocean. My home existed on an island of sorts that hovered in the clouds, invisible to the mortals yet tucked inside their realm on a section of floating land. Only those with certain supernatural abilities could find it, and locating it also required very specific directions, thereby keeping out many unwanted demons and angels.
Invitations were mandated for a reason. To arrive without one would trigger all sorts of unpleasant countermeasures.
We touched down in the middle of a backyard, the house before us unexpected. I frowned at it, then glanced around, hoping no humans had seen us teleport into what appeared to be a semi-wealthy suburban neighborhood.
The rising sun suggested it was only six or seven in the morning, making it less likely that mortals were up and about or spying on neighbors’ lawns. But still, the location left me frowning. “I must not have heard Zebulon right.”
“Oh, you did,” Kayla replied, her hand leaving mine. “This is Gwen’s old house.”
“Gwen?” I repeated.
“Guinevere. Succubus with a bit of a control problem. Best friends with Evangeline. And, given her recent mating with Zebulon, I’m going to assume she’s also now Gleason’s former roommate. Gleason being the Nephilim that Zebulon wanted us to meet, right?” she guessed.
I blinked at her. “How do you even know all that?”
“I spent a few days stalking them while trying to get an audience with Evangeline. I’d planned to ask her to help me get in touch with Johanna. But then Ashmedai found me. And, well, the rest… you know.”
