Freedom carries a tray of cookies on the side of me and dares anyone to question her being here. I just smile. Victory is commenting on everything. The gist is the universe is happy and sending good karma to all that work here. It sounds good to me so I make noise and smile agreeing with her.
Web isn’t in his office, no one is in their offices. We go back to the Prospect. “Where is Web?”
He types on his computer and looks up nervously. “Pres’ meeting room. I can’t disturb him.”
I nod like I care and feel bad for the guy. “I can go back to his office.” I can but I won’t.
He reaches toward Freedom’s tray. “I can send them up.”
Freedom yanks the tray away and I pray the plastic wrap keeps the cookies in. “She’ll bake Prospects cookies tomorrow. Today is the geeks.”
His eyebrows go up and face shows surprise then happiness. “Yes, ma’am. Close the door when you leave so he’ll get some.”
Victory laughs as we walk away. “You know where Cort’s meeting room is?” Freedom asks.
“Yeah, but we need to save some for Web’s team, the little albino and Asian Brothers.” They were at the party but didn’t stay and stuck together, making them memorable. Cort called them the albinos but some aren’t, they have dark hair and eyes. They’re all small framed Brothers.
“Put one tray on Web’s desk and we’ll bring the other to the meeting room.” Victory has a laugh to go with her plan.
We drop a tray at Web’s then knock on the meeting room door. A huge Brother opens it. I don’t know this guy, he’s scary in a deadly kind of way. “The Prospect said he couldn’t disturb Cort. After thinking that through for about a second, I decided I could.”
He laughs and I relax. “Boss, you must know this one.” He opens the door and I smile at my surprised husband.
“You look good with the Badass behind you.”
He shakes his head. “Cookies?”
“It’s what I had to work with. Web, there’s a tray for your workers in your office. I had to sacrifice this one.”
He laughs. “They’ll like that, thanks. I can’t show you the apartment. The cowboy was heading over there with the furniture. Get a Prospect to take you over.”
“I will.”
The big guy points to Freedom. “You weren’t at training.”
She shakes her head. “I teach the women Tuesday mornings. I won’t be with Hade later, we have class a few towns over tonight.”
He looks confused. “Teach what?”
“Krav maga.” Hade looks proud answering.
“Level?” The big guy sounds like a drill sergeant.
Freedom doesn’t take offense. “Second five.”
The guy moves fast. Freedom moves her arm, I drop the tray on the table and lift my leg and the guy freezes. “We need the Brothers learning this, Boss. Even the pretty little one is ready to break my knee.”
I look back and Victory is in a stance to kick. “Look at you, all ready for anything and shit.” She smiles proud and the Brothers laugh while grabbing cookies.
Drill sergeant is back. “Level?” Since he’s looking at Victory and the Brothers are pushing each other out of the way for cookies, I go to Cort for my kiss.
“I wanted to see you before I left for class.”
He delivers the kiss and smiles. “I’m glad you did. I may be late.” He looks at the big guy talking to Freedom and Victory. “The investigation is getting done, so we have a planning meeting to do after this one.” The investigation...the false reports.
