“I can’t have babies,” Axel snorted.
“You can,” Malek replied.
“No, I can’t,” Axel laughed.
“Yes, you can,” Malek repeated, “Once we are mated, your body will change when I claim you and you will be able to have babies with me. We’ll be able to have babies together.”
“No, we can’t,” His mate said.
“Yes, we can,” Malek replied.
“No.We.Can’t,” Axel said, more insistently.
“Yes, wecan, angel,” Malek said it slowly, so that Axel could hear him, see how serious he was.
Axel scrambled off his lap and Malek let him go. His mate paced back and forth, and Malek stayed quiet, trying to give Axel a moment to digest what he’d just been told.
“No, I can’t.” Axel murmured under his breath, but Malek heard him. “It’s not possible. This is a dream. I’m hallucinating.” His mate pinched himself again and yelped again. Malek flinched at the sound, but this time he didn’t interrupt.
He knew Axel’s brain was battling with what he’d always known, and what he’d just been told. His mate had accepted the shifter thing without much convincing, maybe because he’d seen Malek’s wolf, but this was telling him that everything he knew about biology, hisbiology, was about to change.
Axel whirled around and faced him, “I’m not crazy, right?”
“You’re not crazy,” Malek reassured his mate, but stayed where he was. He knew Axel needed to come to terms with this on his own. It was also why Malek wasn’t using any calming pheromones on Axel.
“So you’re telling me if we get together, and if we get mated,” Axel said all this slowly, and Malek tried not to flinch at the fact that his mate was using the wordifwhen it came to their mating.
“If those two things happen, then I can have a baby… your baby,” Axel’s voice lowered, and he added, “Our baby.”
Malek couldn’t read Axel’s tone, so he opened up the growing mate bond, and tried reading Axel’s emotions.
Was that hope and desire he felt coming off his mate?
“Yes, you can have our baby,” Malek replied, his tone soft, and hopeful.
As much as he knew that this was something they could have, still imagining his and Axel’s child… Malek didn’t have words. For as long as he could remember, a mate and a child was all he’d wanted. And now everything was so close, and he was felt like he was on the edge of a cliff, both terrified and exhilarated.
Axel walked up to him, and Malek knew he wasn’t breathing, “We can have a baby… together.”
“We can have a baby together,” Malek echoed.
Malek wasn’t prepared for Axel’s reaction, but his mate moved so quickly, if he wasn’t sure Axel was human, he would have thought his mate had some supernatural speed.
Axel jumped on him, pushing Malek so he was flat on his back on the bed, while his mate straddled his lap.
“We can have a baby,” Axel’s tone was awe-filled, and his face lit up like the sky at night on the fifth of November.
“You’re happy,” Malek said, surprise and joy overwhelming him.
“I’m overjoyed,” Axel breathed, “I know I should be freaked out, and I am, kind of, but not because of the whole I can have a baby thing, but more the complete having a baby. I never thought it would happen for me, obviously,” Axel laughed, “but this is beyond my wildest dreams. I don’t… I have no words.”
Malek smiled, his mate’s joy infectious.
Axel knew all this and he stayed. His mate was here and wanted to have his baby.
What more could a man ask for?
The more his mate wiggled in excitement, the more Malek focused on their position. He couldn’t help himself, his gaze raked over Axel from the top of his gorgeous head down to his leanly-muscled body.
