Int. Brewed Awakening Café (Cont’d)
Kate is standing behind James. She places a hand on his shoulder.
James visibly relaxes.
ANNIE
You can say something to her.
She’s standing right behind you.
James takes a moment to gather his thoughts, keeping his eyes on the table between them.
JAMES
I miss you more than you can possibly
know, Kate. I’ve kept our café, kept our
apartment, and put my head down and worked
to distract myself from losing you. And
also because I feel most close to you
in this space. Now I know why.
KATE
I miss you, too. But I miss the person you
were, not the hollow person you’ve become.
I miss your baking, your dancing, your smile.
I thought I’d never see you the way I remember
you, the way I love you, again. Until Annie
came along.
Kate’s dialogue is interspersed with Annie’s, Annie repeating Kate’s messages for James.
JAMES
I still love you so much.
KATE
Moving forward in your life doesn’t mean
you stop loving me and our past. It means
you make room in your heart for someone new.
I want that for you, James. I want you to
live a full and happy life. You don’t have
to die because I did.
Annie sniffles, cries.
JAMES
I didn’t think it was possible to love
again after my heart was broken that
night. But I see now...
James wipes Annie’s tear, caresses her face.
JAMES (CONT’D)
I see now that it might be possible.
KATE
(whispering in James’s ear)
I know it’s possible. Trust yourself.
Trust her. She’s a good one, James.
She’s exactly who I would have
picked for you.
Kate walks away, leaving Annie and James alone.
