“Cami,”I breathed, relieved to see her awake.

Az had gone to find Lucifer what felt like hours ago, leaving me alone with a shivering Cami.

She’d been gulping in air, almost as though she’d been struggling to breathe. Then she’d muttered something about being let out, causing her legs to kick wildly in response.

I’d tried everything I could think of to wake her from her nightmare, even casting Midnight Fae spells over her prone form in an attempt to free her. But whatever Lucifer had done to her had held her captive, making it impossible to free her.

She stared up at me now, her pupils dilating with palpable relief.

If seeing me made her feel at ease, then she must have been in some sort of hellish mental prison. Because I had to be one of the last people she wanted to be around.

Well, maybe me more so than Lucifer, Melek, and Az. But they weren’t high bars to clear.

Cami groaned as she struggled to sit up on the couch, her eyes still a bit unfocused.

I reached out to help her, but she almost immediately swatted me away. “I can do it,” she insisted.

The sheets slipped off her body, the fabric pooling at her waist as she pushed herself upward. Normally, I would have indulged in the view, but my primary concern was for her safety.

And her stability.

Something she seemed to be lacking as she wobbled in her upright position.

She grimaced as her bare toes touched the floor, her determined expression turning wary. It was almost as though she was uncertain of her reality, or like she’d forgotten how to use her body.

What the fuck had Lucifer done to her?

She finally managed to right herself completely, her sigh a distressed sound to my ears. Yet that sense of determination overcame her features once more as she attempted to stand.

Only to lose her balance in the next second.

I caught her by the hips and instantly pulled her down into my lap, my need to keep her safe overriding every other instinct.

She didn’t protest.

Instead, she collapsed into me and buried her face against my chest with a groan.

I brushed my fingers through her hair, unsure of what to say.

Because I hated this.

I hated that I’d played a part in any of her pain. Cami shouldn’t have gone through everything at the club, or what had transpired in the Marsh Lands, and certainly not whatever the hell had put her in this state.

This whole time, she’d just been trying to survive, and I’d been too wrapped up in my own shit to do anything about it.

Not anymore,I thought.

I’d been forced to stand by and watch those I loved suffer once before. I’d lost everything as a result.

I would not be repeating history with Cami.
