Her jaw clenched. “Were youguardingmy door? Am I being held prisoner?”
“Neh.” A flicker of something, almost like amusement, flashed in his eyes. “As soon as you are recovered, you may leave your bedding. Until then, you are to rest.”
“Put me down.” She squirmed.
“Neh, human.” He restrained her so easily that Symphony didn’t even realize she was being contained. One minute, she was pressed against his chest like a magnet to the fridge, the next, she was swung around and carried, bridal-style, back to her room.
Tiegan’s steps were slow and measured. “I warned them you would run.”
“I wasn’t going to ‘run’,” she defended herself. “I was only going to look around.”
“Against the express wishes of the Healer.” He glanced down at her with that pointed gaze.
Feeling a little bolder than usual, Symphony stared right back. “The Healer doesn’t own me.”
“The Healer is the reason you are still alive.” Tiegan stooped at the foot of her bed but did not put her down. “As am I.”
She rolled her eyes. “Do you want a thank you?”
“I want you to get better.”
“Why? What am I to you?” She glared.
He glanced up thoughtfully. One blue finger began to stroke her hip. Symphony doubted he even realized he was doing it, but it was stirring up a strange feeling in her. It started between her legs and climbed all the way up to her stomach.
She pressed her hand on top of his to stop him and Tiegan jerked his head around. The moment his gaze collided with hers, heat spiraled through her body.
She noticed his eyes darkening, going from purple to a deep, flashing black. All of a sudden, Tiegan tossed her out of his arms as if she were a hot potato. She dropped unceremoniously on top of the bed.
Tiegan’s eyebrows lifted in concern. He rushed toward her. “Sim-pony.”
“I’m fine.” She raised a hand—her left one—to his face, while the other rubbed her bum. “Was that an accident or were you trying to get back at me?”
A purple stain began to spread on his chiseled face. “You should get some rest.”
Tiegan turned to walk away, but she yelled, “Wait.”
He froze.
Symphony pulled her legs up to her chest and hesitated. “I…” She licked her lips. “If I can’t leave, can you ask Sara to come here? I can’t…”
He turned to face her, his eyes narrowed. “Cannot what?”
“I can’t sleep.” She sighed and tugged on the end of one of her braids. “The fact that I’m here… that you’re here… this is all so crazy and unbelievable and…”
“And?”
“Scary.” She blew out a breath. “Besides, I’ve never been great at sleeping in a new place on the first night. “
“Sah-ah has returned to the tribas dwellings.”
“Oh.” She pushed out her bottom lip.
Tiegan strode determinedly to the bed.
Symphony crawled backward, wondering if he was going to climb on with her. Since humans and Plutonians could mate, this guy wouldn’t try to force himself on her, would he?
There was no way she would fall for an alien. None. She couldn’t wrap her brain around any of this, but Symphony knew that much.
