Story: Liberate Us
I was carrying twins.
I was carrying Sammy’s twins.
Dr. Shaw pressed a couple more buttons on the machine and I wasjust about to ask if everything was okay when the most beautiful sound eruptedaround the room. It sounded like a woosh but there were two of them and theyweren’t in sync, but they were perfect.
“That’s…” My throat closed, working hard over a lump.
“That’s the sound of very healthy heartbeats.” Dr. Shaw pressedanother button on the machine, the sounds disappearing soon after. “Here.” Heprinted two pictures of the ultrasound for us and cleaned the jelly off of mystomach. “Everything looks good. Get some rest. Eat healthy. Take folic acid.No strenuous activity.” He went on to list more things I should and shouldn’tbe doing but I couldn’t help but focus on anything but the fact that I wasstaring at an ultrasound of twin babies that were currently growing inside ofme.
“Did you hear him?” Sammy asked a moment later.
“What?” I looked up, finding Sammy and I alone. “Oh, I wasdistracted.”
He gave me a small smile and stood. “You’re around four months,Red.” He kissed my temple. “That means I got you pregnant the first time Ifucked you.”
My breath wavered.
“That means that one of my boys, really wanted your egg.” Hismouth moved from my temple to my ear. “That means that we didn’t just breakyour table, but we also broke the damn condom too.”
A husky laugh left me. “Have we really been sleeping togetherfor that long already?”
Sammy cupped my stomach. “Time flies when you’re having fun.” Hehelped me off the table, righted my shirt, and kissed me hard on the mouth.“Come. Let’s go back to your place and we’ll call your mom.”
“You still spending the rest of the week with me?” He had madeplans to, but I wasn’t sure if anything changed.
“Yes.” Sammy grabbed my hands, bringing them up to his mouth. “Ilove you.”
My stomach did a flip. “I love you, too.”
And I was so damn thankful that I had a second chance athappiness. Sammy and I would have to work for our relationship just like mosthad to, but I knew right then, with the way he was currently looking at me,that I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else.

After we found outthat Amber was pregnant withtwins, I took her out for lunch. We ended up spending a couple of hours at therestaurant, laughing, flirting, and enjoying our time together.
“Could you imagine if it’s two girls?” Amber teased, placing herfeet on my lap.
I looked down, wrapped a hand around her ankle, and pulled itagainst my crotch.
Her cheeks turned pink, a knowing glint flashing in her eyes.
“If it’s two girls, I’m going to have to invest in a securityteam for them.” I pushed a thumb into the arch of her foot.
Amber sighed, staring at me from across the table. “I’m happywith whatever gender they are.”
“Me too, pet.”
And I would be. I just wanted both of the babies to be healthy.
The picture of the ultrasound burned in my wallet, and Icouldn’t wait to show my brother. I hadn’t seen him in awhile and I was excitedto share that our family was growing.
I was sitting outside his house that he shared with his fiancée,and I found that I was nervous to tell him. I wasn’t sure why exactly. Maybe hewould think it was too soon for me and Amber or he would say that I wasn’tready to be a father. It wasn’t the fact that I wasn’t ready but I wasterrified, and I knew that Amber was too. Especially since finding out we weregoing to have two little humans to take care of. This world was fucked up. Wewould have to raise our children to be strong enough to handle it.
As I slid off my bike, I sent Amber a text letting her know thatI was at Cyrus’s place. She hadn’t been feeling well, so she stayed home. I lefther in bed with the TV on, a box of crackers on her lap, and a bottle ofGatorade on her nightstand.
Red: Have fun. Love you!
Me: Love you too, pet. Send me a picture.
