Story: Delayed Offsides
I shift Caleb in my arms and reach for the coffee she hands me. “What’s wrong?”
Walking into the condo, Ami turns to me, sets her own coffee on the kitchen island, and places her hands on her hips. “Do you think I’m too young to get married?”
“Why?”
“Evan left his iPad in the bedroom, and I was going to order takeout, so I grabbed it. He had the Tiffany’s website pulled up.”
“Tiffany’s? Maybe he wants to buy you a necklace or earrings.”
She blinks a few times. “The page was on engagement rings.”
“Okay, well, maybe then. I haven’t heard anything. At least Leo hasn’t said anything.”
Her eyes widen. “What do I do?”
“Pretend you didn’t see it and wait?”
That’s not the answer she’s looking for. Rolling her eyes, she takes Caleb from me. “I’m so impatient. I need to know.”
“Would you say yes?” I hand her the blanket in my hands to cover him up with.
“Yes. I love him so much, Callie. He’s so much more than I ever thought he would be. He’s just… Mase. Loving, possessive in the right ways, and all heart and soul. His mom once told me there was a reason he was born on Valentine’s Day, and I believe that.”
Caleb starts to fuss in her arms, so she hands him back to me after I warm up his bottle.
Evan has the biggest heart out of all the players. There’s a reason why I thought I was in love with him at one time, even if it was only for a day. He makes you feel like when you’re with him, you’re the only one who matters.
Leo is very different. He annoys you to the point where you have to love him. If not, you’ll kill him. Sure, there are private, intimate moments with him. Ones where he lets down his guard and lets you in, shows you a vulnerability you know he has. And those intimate moments, the ones where you get a little glimpse of who he really is are breathtaking.
“Do you love Leo?” Ami asks, catching me off guard as I feed Caleb.
I smile and look down at Caleb. “Yes.”
“He loves you too.”
“I know he does… but neither of us has said it.”
“I know. Mase told me.”
My eyes widen. “He told him?”
“Yeah, I think. He just said Leo hasn’t said it yet.”
“He hasn’t.”
“He does, though.” She rubs my shoulder and then frowns. “Did I hear Evan right this morning? Ryland passed away?”
My eyes drop to Caleb in my arms, fast asleep after his breakfast. “She did. I guess she passed an hour before Leo got there this morning.”
Tears flood Ami’s eyes. “Oh God, he knows?”
I nod. “Yeah, he took me to the hospital to see her, and that’s when Jillian told us.”
Ami sighs, shaking her head. “How’s he going to play tonight with that on his mind?”
“I don’t know. I’m nervous myself.”
