Page 89 of We The Depraved
She eyes me, and I drop a kiss on her head.
“Get some rest.”
I don’t look back once I close the door.
My heart tells me, she’s going to get in bed and sleep till tomorrow, but that when tomorrow comes, she’ll still be here.
I pass Nana on the steps and she offers a smile. “Sage home?”
“She is, Ma’am.”
“Sounds like she’s madder than a hornet’s nest,” she pats me absent mindedly. “Don’t worry, she’ll calm down in an hour. Been that way her whole life.”
The old woman chuckles and continues dup the steps. I can only hope that Sage is indeed going to calm down in an hour.
I return to my office and only Damien is left. Artur has women to fuck and Erik is off to do whatever it is he does in his spare time.
My brother pours me a drink and then one for himself. He holds up a glass full of amber colored liquor.
“Texas is ours,” he nods.
“Texas is ours,” I repeat and swallow some of the liquid.
We sit then and relax. My back eases into the familiar and worn brown leather office chair.
“How is she?”
“Tormented. Broken.”
“Is she as depraved as you are?”
I quirk an eyebrow, “Sage has always been my equal. It was born out of a need to survive. I have to remember every waking moment; she doesn’t actually need me.”
Damien quirks a smile, “I’m starting to like her.”
“We have a lifetime to go, so I imagine you better start to feel some sort of affection for her.”
My brother is quiet for a while, and we sip our breakfast some more.
“And Governor Davis?”
I stiffen.
“She’s going to be a fucking problem…but for now, she’s handled. She hates that I’m married. She hates Sage and now that I know her dirty fucking secrets, if your last name is Safaryan, she’s got it out for you.”
Damien nods after another sip, “Then she’s going to be in for a fucking nightmare of her own making.”
The weight of my brother’s words lingers in the air. Judge Porter’s files have imbued me with power; I will shape the world to my making.
In the great state of Texas, I am king.
CHAPTER29
Epilouge
Three months later…
Biting onto my lower lip, I stare at the computer screen. Nothing appears just yet and so I hit refresh again. This has been going on for nearly fifteen minutes, even though I was told grades wouldn’t be in until noon.
