“Fuck,” the words drop from my mouth. “I could be an aunt….you an uncle.”
“This is how that works,” Niki stirs the beef into the stainless steel pan.
My mind drifts for a few minutes as it gets quiet between us.
“Find a good movie,” Niki says. “I had the cable turned on a week ago in anticipation of this trip.”
“You know….if we’re going to be married,” I hop down from the counter top and stride into the kitchen. “I need to know what you like to watch. Horror movies are kind of a deal breaker for me. And black trauma movies too.”
“Black trauma?”
I look over my shoulder at him and realize he’s searching for dishes while I explore the unlimited channel selections. Finally I sign in to my Netflix account that I haven’t used in forever.
“Oooh, this looks kind of promising,” I murmur out loud.
I’ve heard the girls talking about the hot Duke of Hastings and finally my time has come. This is no wizarding world but I’ll watch a good romance at any point.
“What’d you pick?”
Niki walks in with two plates, and the cutlery.
“Bridgerton?”
He frowns. “I think Artur watched this.”
“Really?”
“Yes, he said it was sexy.”
It was hard to believe my new brother-in-law had watched this.
“He also said, and I quote, there were titties.”
“That explains so much,” I laugh and we sit down to eat.
Ballrooms and ballgowns are apparently a thing in this show too, and I find myself intrigued by the dresses. I missed prom because I was drunk at a party.
Niki must have read my mind.
“You know the Governor’s ball is coming up soon,” he states.
“Really?”
“Yes, and we’re going.”
We lock eyes.
“Oh you need to show off your brand new bride?”
“Something like that,” he takes a huge bite of food.
“I think that I might like that,” I bite my lip.
“Like what?”
“Like being shown off.”
Niki grins. “There will be powerful people there. Enemies too.”
