Page 90 of Sixty Meters Under
Lennart stormed in and froze when he saw a pool of blood around Ryosuke’s figure.
He bent down to check on him. “No, no, no. What did you do?” He leaned over and shook Ryosuke’s shoulder to get him to his senses. Only then did he notice how limp Ryosuke’s body was.
“Oh, my God. No!”
With shaky hands Lennart searched for the wound and found Ryosuke’s right arm bloody and examined the other. He noticed a fork next to him and decided that Ryosuke must have hurt himself with it.
What have you done? And why? Why?
Lennart tore the front of his shirt to make a temporary bandage for Ryosuke’s wrist. He worked hurriedly on his arm, when he heard the guard ask, “Need help?”
“Call Doctor Olsson and tell him I’m bringing a patient. That it’s urgent.”
Hang in there, Ryosuke. Don’t die on me… please, don’t die.
When Lennart made sure that the fabric was securely wrapped around Ryosuke’s wrist, he took him in his arms and headed for the exit.
Chapter 25
Ryosuke felt like a feather in his arms when Lennart carried him to the medical room. Lennart’s heart hammered and his head spun in his haste.
I’ll get you help in time. I won’t forgive myself if you die.
Lennart couldn’t even imagine such a scenario, but it was hard not to think about it. One foot in front of the other, he wished to be in the medical room at once.
Why are these corridors so long?
Lennart gasped for air as he took the last step up the stairs.
Why end your life? Why go that far? Are you guilty of Scarlett’s death after all?
Reaching the destination seemed like an eternity, but when he entered relieved Lennart of his physical and emotional burdens.
“What happened?” Doctor Olsson asked.
“A suicide attempt.”
“Jesus. Put him on here.”
Lennart laid Ryosuke’s body carefully on the table. He noticed how unnaturally pale he was, and wondered if he was still breathing. The nurse came to the table to help the doctor, so Lennart took a few steps back to let them work.
“Get some covers before he freezes,” Lennart heard the doctor say, then after a while, “We need to give him blood as soon as possible.”
“I will give him mine,” Lennart spoke and saw them both turn to him.
When the nurse left to get a blanket the doctor said, “I need to check his medical record first to see if you are compati–” but Lennart cut him off.
“I’m compatible. I’m O negative.”
The doctor looked at him skeptically and Lennart added, “Just do the necessary tests. I will give him my blood.”
?
Ayame didn’t leave the room for a few hours. Ryosuke’s desire to break off their engagement shook her world to the core, and she didn’t want anyone to see her in such a state.
Maybe he’ll change his mind. This feels like a bad dream. This can’t be happening for real.
She always got what she wanted, and Ryosuke was the man with whom she saw her future.
