Sarah didn’t answer but felt her mother sitting beside her. “Hello? Is Sarah in there?”

“I’m scared,” was Sarah’s muffled reply.

“Scared of what? I’ve already explained that there’s nothing to be afraid of. I know this place seems a little scary, but there’s no reason to be scared. I’m here with you. Always.”

“But I sawit. Again.”

“There’s no one here, except us, Sarah. I don’t know what you saw. We already talked about this.”

Sarah pulled the cover off her head and looked around.

“Do you still see it?” her mother asked.

The girl shook her head. “Not anymore.”

“Sometimes we think we saw something, even though there’s nothing. Especially in the dark. It happens to all of us. You’re still little, so you’re experiencing it… differently,” her mother reasoned.

Sarah nodded and lowered her head on the pillow.

“Good night, sweety.” The woman leaned over and kissed her daughter on the forehead. She turned on the night lamp and turned off the light in the bathroom and lay down in her bed next to Sarah’s.

Liam took a sip of his morning coffee as he sat at the table in the communication room at the top floor. Edvin yawned beside him and turned on the radio. The room was filled with static once again.

Liam switched the channel, pushed the button and spoke to the microphone, “Hello? Can anyone hear me?”

Only hissing greeted him back.

He changed the channel and tried again, “Hello?”

“Liam? Is that you?”

“Lucas?”

“Yeah, it’s me. Do you have some news?”

“No, nothing new. Just hiding, surviving.” Liam shook his head even when he knew that Lucas couldn’t see him. “What about you?”

“We went out today to see the situation above.”

“What?” Liam asked, taken aback. “How did you do it with such crazy high levels of radiation?”

“With a very thick suit and a mask. But we don’t have it that high anymore.”

“Huh? How’s that possible? You’re just about two kilometers away from us.” Liam shared a look with Edvin.

“We have no idea. We checked the radiation levels this morning and sent two people outside for a few minutes.”

“What did they see?”

“A cloud of smoke and dust. All above us.”

“Sounds promising.” Liam frowned. “It means the wind is blowing in our direction now and taking all away.”

“It seems so.”

“Are the buildings very damaged?” Liam asked since he knew that Lucas was in the bunker just outside the town.
