Lennart leaned over, and his eyes narrowed. “She didn’t. I would have seen that myself on the monitor footage.”
Ryosuke was at a loss for words. He looked at the detective and felt like he was experiencing the worst nightmare of his life. Was he capable of forgetting such an important detail? Did he really hit her? But most importantly, why?
“W-well… then… her husband must have hit her. I-I didn’t do it,” he stuttered while shaking his head.Does this man think I killed her? Is he planning to accuse me of murder?Ryosuke’s heart uncomfortably squeezed.
“Then tell me, what were you two doing together in the men’s restroom?”
Ryosuke sighed. Where should he start? He looked at the white wall that stretched around them, trying to find the right words. “My fiancé threw a glass of wine in Scarlett’s face. I-in a fit of jealousy… W-when Scarlett came over to say hello. At the party.” Ryosuke nervously rubbed his hands together. “I didn’t want to leave Scarlett to deal with the aftermath alone, so I helped her to the restroom to clean up.”
Lennart clicked his tongue. “How nice of you. That’s how a true gentleman should behave.” He glanced at the ball in his hand then focused back on Ryosuke. “But what exactly made your fiancé so jealous that she threw a drink at her?”
“I was wondering the same thing. I didn’t even get a proper chance to ask, Scarlett already had wine all over her.” Ryosuke shook his head, remembering.
“Interesting.”
“I don’t know what’s interesting about that.” Ryosuke narrowed his eyes and clenched his fists.
“It’s a possibility that jealousy might be the motivation for Scarlett’s death,” Lennart replied, unfazed by Ryosuke’s reaction.
Ryosuke frowned. “Well, her husband was very jealous. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did it and tried to put the blame on someone else.”
“We’ll find out sooner or later,” Lennart said, and added, raising his index finger, “But, Mister Kato, you look like you know something more.”
Ryosuke sighed and looked at his hands that were resting on the table. “I told you everything I know.”
Lennart leaned closer, still looking intently at him. “What could be the reason Scarlett’s husband was jealous? To the extent that he’d kill his wife, hm? Did he see something he didn’t like when he entered the restroom?”
Ryosuke tensed. “No. As I already said, I only went to help her to wipe herself off.”
“Was Scarlett your secret lover?”
“What? N-no! Of course not!” Ryosuke was taken aback by the question. His cheeks flushed so he had to quickly avert his gaze.
“Your face gives you away, Mr. Kato.”
Ryosuke looked at Lennart, irritated by that statement. “I wasn’t her lover!”
“Then why was your fiancé so jealous she soaked her in wine?”
“I have no idea!”
“You better not be lying to me, Mr. Kato,” Lennart proceeded calmly, “Because the truth will come out. At the end.”
Ryosuke’s frustration only grew bigger, and he could feel his face becoming hot. “I’m not lying!”
“But you’re also not telling the whole truth either.”
“You know what?” Ryosuke got up. “I’m done! You have no evidence to support any of your accusations!”
Lennart leaned back into his chair, his face remaining stoic. “Fine, you can run away, but the truth will catch up with you eventually.”
Frustrated, Ryosuke turned and left the room. He didn’t stop even when he noticed his father’s worried face.
Lennart continued to sit at the table when he saw Ryosuke’s father storm in right after Ryosuke left.
“What happened?” Isamu asked, anxiety palpable in his voice.
Lennart continued squeezing the ball and looking at the empty wall in front of him. “Your son is definitely hiding something,” he said after a brief pause.
