I sat on the chair Dylan had been in and slumped. “Hell if I know.”
Dylan spoke up finally. “He tried to rape me. He probably has raped other people. I say we shoot him and bury his body on this farm. No one would ever find him.”
Hank started cursing again, and Charles kicked him. “Shut up.”
Hank grunted and gave Charles a surly look.
Gabriele curled his lip. “Is that how this goes now? You save outsiders and murder your own men?”
I met his gaze. “I’d prefer no one dies.”
Gabriele didn’t look convinced.
Somehow, Hank had worked his gag down enough to talk. “You should kill us. You’re toast, Lex. The second I get back to Turbin, I’m gathering some men and we’re coming after you. You won’t survive the fucking week.”
“You’re sick. You get off on hurting people, don’t you?” I scowled.
“Yeah, I do,” hissed Hank. “And I’m going to enjoy making you scream. I know all kinds of way to make you suffer. Ways you’d never let me use on anyone else.” His smile was malignant. “I can’t wait to watch you piss yourself when I peel the skin off your face.”
A shiver ran through me at the obvious hatred in his eyes.
“Jesus,” Dylan said, looking repulsed. “You’re disgusting.”
Even Gabriele looked troubled at Hank’s outburst. He moved to the other man, and he tugged the gag back into place. Hank gave an indignant growl and tried kicking him. Charles seemed to have had enough, because he strode over and punched Hank hard in the face. Hank went limp, and Charles straightened with a smug expression.
“Asshole,” he said, breathing hard. “Don’t suppose you guys will let me use the cattle prod on him?”
“No.” Gabriele’s voice was stiff, and he faced me. “You realize you ruined your life, right?”
“I know.” I hadn’t really thought much past saving Dylan. He was safe now, but I wasn’t. Well, at least I’d done one good thing in my life.
“If you go home, you’re dead.” Gabriele studied me coldly.
“Yes.”
Dylan gave a sharp intake of breath. “Your own men would kill you?”
I met his worried gaze. “I’ve betrayed them. Of course they’ll turn on me now.”
“Goddamned right,” Gabriele spat out. “We have every right to do that too.”
“He needs to come back to the compound with us,” Dylan addressed Charles. “He’ll be safe there.”
“What?” Charles didn’t look thrilled with that idea. “No way.”
“He saved us.” Dylan’s expression was stubborn.
“Dylan,” Charles groaned. “You know he can’t come with us.”
“Why not?”
I sighed. “Dylan, it’s okay. I know I can’t go with you.”
“So we just leave you vulnerable after you saved our lives?” Dylan looked angry, and he gave Charles a resentful glance. “That’s not fair.”
Charles leaned toward him. “He created this whole nightmare. We wouldn’t have needed saving if it wasn’t for him.”
Pink touched Dylan’s cheeks. “I… I know… but what’s done is done. We can’t just let him die.”
