He nodded, but he was white as a ghost, and there was a sheen of sweat on his face.
I frowned, moving closer. “Was I too rough?”
“No. You didn’t do anything. I’m just a bit nauseated.” He shivered.
My stomach churned, and I wanted to pull him into my arms to comfort him. But I wasn’t sure he’d appreciate that gesture. After all, he wasn’t actually my omega. I brushed hair from his forehead, and when he met my gaze, I was startled by how blue his eyes were. I blinked at the brilliance of his irises. Was it just the lighting in the room that made them stand out so much? I was about to say something, but he jumped from the bed suddenly and rushed into his bathroom.
I sat up, concerned to hear him retching in the bathroom. I rose and dressed quickly, then went to the door. “Can I get you anything?”
“No,” he mumbled weakly. “I’ll be fine in a minute.”
I wanted to give him privacy but couldn’t force myself to leave him. After a few minutes, I heard water running, and he came out. He looked surprised to see me hovering, and he sighed and fell onto the bed. “I think stress is getting to me.”
I sat on the foot of the bed. “You’re sure I didn’t do anything? Iwaskind of rough.” My dick twitched at the memory of pounding into him, but I shoved those feelings down. Now was not the time to lust after him.
“Lex, you didn’t hurt me.” He curled into a ball and hugged his knees to his chest. I pulled the blankets over him, and he whispered, “Thank you.”
Maybe I should have left him alone to sleep, but I couldn’t seem to. I stayed where I was, anxiety bubbling in my gut as I listened to his slow breathing. I knew he fell asleep at some point, and he whimpered and moved around, dreaming. I hadn’t ever felt so protective about anyone before; it was an odd sensation, and not entirely pleasant.
When he finally woke, hours later, he seemed better. He sat up, wiping his eyes. “Shit. I slept?”
“Yes. You obviously needed it.”
He watched me, his expression puzzled. “You stayed here the whole time?”
I nodded. “I didn’t feel right leaving you.”
He gave a funny laugh. “I guess it’s becoming a habit for you to take care of me.”
Guilt nipped at me because the first time had all been an act. This time it wasn’t though. I’d been unable to walk away from him as he slept. I didn’t know why, but the pull to stay close had been powerful. Now that he seemed more like himself, the tension drained from me.
I stood. “I’m going to shower.”
“I’d offer to join you, but I’m still a little weak.”
My body warmed at the idea of him wet and needy in the shower. I had to stop myself from taking him up on his offer. “You should rest some more. I’ll cook dinner.”
“Really?” He sounded pleased. “That would be wonderful.”
I smiled. “My pleasure.” I left his room, ignoring the desire to stay. He was fine now. Whatever had bothered him earlier seemed to have passed. He wasn’t my omega, and I had no right to hover around him as if I was his alpha.
I thought about tomorrow and the fact I’d never see him again. The regret and sadness that hit me at that thought was unsettling. I was shocked to realize I had actual feelings for Dylan. I knew he’d be hurt when I disappeared tomorrow, and that bothered me. But I had to focus on why I was here. I hadn’t gone to all this trouble to simply laze around and explore my newfound enjoyment of men. I’d come here to find out what happened to Dad and punish whoever was responsible. Tomorrow I’d grab Charles and make him tell me everything he knew. Then I’d probably have to kill him.
I had no time for warm and fuzzy feelings about missing Dylan. I’d enjoyed our time together, but as soon as the sun came up, whatever was between us had to end.
Chapter Nineteen
Dylan
I slept a few more hours and woke refreshed. I had no idea why I was so tired, but I was better now. Sex with Lex had been perfect. I wanted more, but I wasn’t sure he did. He’d said the sex was great, and he’d definitely been into it at the time. That didn’t mean he wanted to do it again though. He’d scratched his itch, and that was easily all he’d needed.
I showered and then joined Lex in the kitchen where he was busy chopping vegetables. “What are you making?”
He smiled at me and surprised me with a soft kiss. “Stir-fry.”
“That sounds good.” My pulse was quick, and my lips tingled as I leaned against the counter.
“Well, you were sleeping, and I didn’t think I was allowed to go shopping. Wouldn’t want Charles upset with me again,” he muttered. “I decided to make something with what you already had here.”
