“Good luck, Dylan. The Ancients wouldn’t have matched you if they didn’t want you together. Remember that. Lex might falter, but I think he will step up. He hasn’t been perfect, but he’s done the right thing when it really mattered. I’m hoping he will do that this time too.”
“I wish I could speak to the Ancients. I’d love to ask them why we have to have so many secrets. It just makes this all so much harder for my kind.”
“It’s to protect you.”
I gave him a sullen look. “Or is it to protect them? To make them feel important?”
He looked shocked. “Dylan, that isn’t true. Protecting the solar eclipse omegas is one of their greatest chores.”
“Where were they when Lex had me captive? No one came to save me.”
He looked disappointed in me. “Dylan, that’s because you were with your fated mate. They trusted he would protect you. And he did.”
Shame filtered in at his heartfelt words. He had a point. Lex had always been in control, and because of his love for me, I’d probably never been in any actual danger. “Well, it was pretty terrifying for me since I had no idea he was my fated mate.”
He laughed. “I know. I do wish there was a better way. But things change. Perhaps the Ancients will modernize one day. There are more and more solar eclipse omegas being born. They might have to change because of that.”
“I won’t hold my breath.”
He sighed. “Go home to Lex. Tell him the news. Perhaps he will surprise you.”
I nodded and left the clinic. Earlier I’d been so excited to get home to see Lex; now I was dreading it. Dreading the look of repulsion I feared I’d see on his face when I told him I was carrying his child.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Lex
The minute Dylan entered the cabin, I knew something was wrong. He wouldn’t look at me, and he went straight into his room. Worry attacked me as I waited patiently in the living room, but when he didn’t come out, I went to knock on his door.
“Dylan?” I called softly. “Are you okay?”
He didn’t respond, and I started to walk away. But then I decided that was silly. We’d had a wonderful day together, and if something was wrong, it couldn’t be my fault. For all intents and purposes, I was his alpha. It was my role to comfort him. I opened the door slowly and found him sitting on the edge of the bed.
He looked surprised when I opened the door.
“I knocked,” I said. “But I guess you didn’t hear me.”
“I heard you.”
That wasn’t the response I wanted. “Is something wrong?”
He shrugged.
“Why are you hiding in your room?”
“I’m trying to think of how to tell you something.”
My heart sank at his glum tone. Had he decided he didn’t want to be with me anymore? Shock rattled through me, leaving me panicked. What could have changed between now and lunchtime? I struggled to keep my breathing calm, and I entered the room more fully. “Just tell me. You don’t need to sugarcoat things.”
He glanced at me, and his eyes were filled with fear. That confused me, and I moved closer, instinctively wanting to comfort him. But before I could reach him, he stood and moved across the room. I clenched my jaw, frustrated that he wouldn’t tell me what was going on.
“Dylan,” I said brusquely, “Tell me what’s bothering you.”
“You’re going to be upset.”
God. What could this be about? I felt sick with fear. “You know I love you, right? I’m not good at saying it, but I do love you. More than anything.”
His face wrinkled as if in pain. “Don’t say that. That only makes it worse when you take it back.”
