I took his hand, and he squeezed my fingers. “I guess if you’d told me this in the beginning, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m finding it hard to swallow even now.”
Charles studied me, his gaze assessing. “I understand. You, of course, realize this story can never be shared. I know you’ll probably tell Gabriele, but other than that, no one on the outside can hear about any of this.”
“Who would I tell?” I frowned and looked at Dylan. “The only people I care about are inside the compound.”
Charles straightened. “Well, now you have your answers. Hopefully you have the closure you wanted.”
“Thank you.”
Dylan grunted. “Oh, God.”
Charles and I both looked at him and found him clutching his stomach. “Shit.” He groaned. “Oh, that fucking hurts.”
I stood, panic jolting through me. “Is it… is it the baby?”
He gritted his teeth. “I hope so, otherwise something is really wrong with me.”
I started to take his arm, but his face contorted, and he pushed me away. He was flushed and panting when he finally opened his eyes. “Get the bag. We need to go.”
Charles stood watching, looking flustered. “Lex, just go to the clinic. I’ll get the bag and bring it to you. Where is it?”
“Bedroom,” I yelled, helping Dylan down the steps to the car. Even though it was only about a ten-minute trip on foot, no way would we be able to walk. He was in too much pain, and it would probably take an hour. We only had thirty minutes.
I got him in the car, and he leaned against the door, cursing and writhing. My hands shook so hard I almost dropped the keys, but I managed to start the engine. “It’s okay. It won’t be long now.” I kept my voice calm, even though inside I was definitely panicking.
He kicked and groaned. “This is fucking unreal,” he hissed. “I didn’t expect it to hurt so much.”
I gritted my teeth and backed carefully out of the driveway. “Two minutes and we’ll be at the clinic.”
“Fuck,” he rasped, throwing his head back.
I drove slowly because I was afraid of getting into an accident if I wasn’t super careful. Even so, we were there with plenty of time to spare. I helped Dylan from the car and up the stairs.
Dr. Peters greeted us at the doorway to the clinic. “Charles called me to tell me you were on the way.” He sounded breathless.
“Oh, yeah. I didn’t think to do that.” I frowned.
“Of course you didn’t.” He smiled. “The alphas never remember. They’re too busy tending to their omega.”
Dylan groaned. “This has given me a new appreciation for our patients.”
Dr. Peters chuckled and led the way to the surgery. “Lex, do you want to be in here, or do you want to wait outside?”
“I want to be here.” I didn’t even hesitate.
A slight blonde walked up. She smiled and handed me a gown and mask. “Put these on.”
“Thanks.” I gave her a nervous smile.
“I’m Priscilla. I’m filling in for Dylan while he’s out on paternity leave.”
“Could you two maybe get acquainted later? I’m having a fucking baby here,” Dylan grumbled.
I grimaced.
She laughed, looking unfazed. “All omegas are grumpy when they get here. Sometimes they even hit their alphas and yell. Dylan’s being pretty nice right now.”
I slipped into the gown, while Dr. Peters helped Dylan up on the operating table. Priscilla rubbed iodine over Dylan’s rounded belly, and Dr. Peters administered gas to help Dylan relax. Then he gave him a shot to block all pain during the surgery.
