“Yes.” I was looking forward to that too. A whole month of just me and Lex home together. I couldn’t wait. Once the baby came, things would get a lot harder.
“Unless you experience bleeding or actual contractions, I shouldn’t need to see you until your scheduled C-section in four weeks.”
“Great.” I slid off the table.
“I’ll keep him well fed until then,” Lex said. He hesitated. “Uh… I wanted to ask you some things about how this all goes. I mean the delivery. I know you’re going to do a C-section, but how will I know when it’s time to bring him in? What if he goes into early labor? Will I know that?”
Dr. Peters grinned. “When it’s real labor, you’ll know. There will be no mistaking the pain he’s in.” His smile faded. “But remember, he has to get in here within thirty minutes. That leaves no time for anything like showers or scenic drives. When real labor starts, you get him here. The earlier the better.”
“Okay.” Lex’s jaw was tense. “I can’t believe the solar eclipse omegas have no way to birth the child other than a C-section. That seems like such an obvious oversight.”
Dr. Peters nodded. “Ours is not to reason why…”
“I’m just glad I don’t have to deal with being pregnantandhaving a period.” I scowled. “It’s weird enough being a man who can get pregnant.”
Lex laughed. “You do have to go through a lot. But I suppose in a way, you should feel honored.”
“I should?” I frowned.
“Yeah, you were chosen. Without your kind, none of us would be here. From what Charles said, you saved our species. You’re not just special to me; you’re special to our entire kind.”
My heart warmed at his heartfelt words. “Thanks, Lex.”
“Don’t thank me. I’m just happy to be with you.”
I grinned. “So you’re a romantic after all.”
He twisted his lips. “I wasn’t. Not even a little.”
“But then you met me.” I smirked.
He shrugged. “Yeah, then I met you.”
Chapter Thirty
Lex
Dylan and I were enjoying a lazy morning on the sun-drenched porch, when Charles came striding up the driveway. My gut immediately tensed, just like it always did when he appeared. He stopped in front of us, unsmiling as usual. Well, to be fair, he smiled at Dylan, but it faded as soon as he faced me.
“Morning, Lex.” His voice was gruff.
“To what do we owe this pleasure?” I asked sardonically.
Dylan laughed softly.
“Since Dylan is ready to pop out the baby tomorrow, I figured it was time you got the closure you wanted.” He shifted uneasily. “If you’ve hung in with him this long, I have to assume your intentions are pure.”
I sat up, staring at him intently. “Of course my intentions are pure, and what do you mean you’re going to give me closure?”
“About your dad.” He looked uncomfortable. “I don’t think you should have to forever wonder about how your dad died.”
My heart picked up speed. “Okay.”
“It’s about time,” Dylan grumbled. “You should have told him months ago.” He rubbed his big belly. “He obviously wasn’t going anywhere.”
“I couldn’t be sure.” He grimaced. “But Gabriele convinced me that it’s time you knew the truth.”
“Gabriele convinced you?” I laughed. “I didn’t think you two talked.”
