“Yeah, just that one small detail.”
It was bizarre to think that only days ago, I hadn’t trusted Lex. I’d found him attractive but hadn’t had any desire to get to know him better. He’d seemed too slick, too confident. He’d watched me a lot, and that had made me uneasy. But now we were in a situation together that forced me to rely on him. If we were going to survive this, we needed to depend on each other.
“Why were you at the Purple Pooch?” I asked softly.
He gave a gruff laugh. “Promise you won’t judge me?”
“Yes.”
“I was looking to get laid.”
My face flushed, and I swallowed loudly. “Oh.”
“There weren’t many women there though. It was almost all guys.”
“Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it,” I said weakly.
He gave a hard laugh. “Yeah, not interested.”
“I know. You made that clear in class.” I grimaced.
“Oh, yeah. When you thought I was hitting on you.”
Heat deepened in my cheeks. “In my defense, you were asking a lot of personal questions. Most guys don’t do that just because.”
“I’m in sales, remember? It’s my job to ask questions. That’s how I make a sale. The more I know about someone, the easier it is to sell to them. I guess it’s become a habit to ask questions, whether I’m working or not.”
“I see.”
“Hey, why were you at the Purple Pooch?” he asked suddenly.
“Oh, well… my memory’s a little fuzzy, but I think I wanted a beer.”
“That’s all?” He sounded skeptical.
“It is a bar.”
“True.” I could feel his gaze on me. He leaned his head back against the wall. “I wonder what time it is.”
I studied the strip of light beneath the door. “I think it’s almost morning.”
“I hope they feed us. I’m starving.”
I wrinkled my face in distaste. “I’m too nervous to eat.”
He stood and stretched, then flipped on the bathroom light. I winced and shielded my eyes.
He must have noticed my reaction, because he said, “Sorry.” He looked tired, and his suit jacket was rumpled. I’d never seen him anything but perfectly groomed. “That was a long night.”
“Yes.” I stood slowly, holding on to the tile wall to steady myself. I was still weak from not eating, but I did feel better after having some sleep. “I need to pee. Can you turn your back?”
“Of course,” he said, turning to face the door.
Feeling self-conscious, I unzipped my jeans and did my business. Then I redid my pants and washed my hands. “Okay, it’s safe to look.”
“My turn.”
I took his spot, leaning on the door for support. Even though I was weak, it felt good to walk around and get the blood pumping again. He relieved himself and alerted me when he was done. I brushed my teeth with my finger and warm water, and he did the same. We fell into a natural rhythm, moving around each other silently. At one point, he took his shirt off and washed his armpits with the shower gel from the basket on the sink. I couldn’t help but check out his bare torso when he stripped off his shirt. He was perfect—muscles in all the right places and tanned, smooth skin.
