Dylan met my gaze, and for once he looked less angry with me. “But… it was hisdad.”
“You know there are things we can’t talk about, that happen inside the compound.” He gave Dylan a pointed look. “Don’t push this.”
Dropping his gaze, Dylan looked conflicted. “I know… but…”
“What happened to their bodies?” I asked gruffly, switching gears. “Did you dispose of them as ruthlessly as you did the car?”
“There were no bodies,” Charles said quietly.
“What?” I scowled. “Then how do you know they’re dead?”
Sighing, Charles said, “Jack and Carter witnessed their deaths. There was blood evidence and ripped clothing supporting their story.”
Dylan widened his eyes. “Wait… is this all connected to the animal attack?”
Charles avoided his gaze.
“There was no animal attack, was there?” I asked.
“You’re not getting any more details, so drop it,” growled Charles, his eyes guarded.
“Drop it?” I laughed humorlessly. “Drop the fact you’re at the center of my dad’s murder?”
“It wasn’t murder. It was self-defense.” Charles frowned. “It was to protect Carter and Jack.”
“I don’t give a fuck about protecting Jack and Carter,” I hissed. “Someone has to pay for Dad’s death. That’s how it is, and there’s just no changing that.”
“So make me pay. But let Dylan go. He had nothing to do with any of this.” Charles gave Dylan a worried glance.
“I’m not just going to sit quietly while they… kill you, or whatever they have planned,” Dylan said softly.
Ignoring Dylan, Charles addressed me. “He’s an innocent in this. Let him go.”
I pushed away the urge to give in and get Dylan to safety. I couldn’t focus on him right now. “I’ll figure out what to do with Dylan later. Right now, I need all the details, Charles. If you won’t willingly tell me, it’s time to go downstairs and let Hank do his magic.”
“God, no.” Dylan looked like he felt nauseous. “Charles, please just tell him what he wants.”
Charles shook his head and then blinked as if the movement made him dizzy. “I can handle whatever they dish out.”
“You can’t,” I said coldly. “Trust me.”
“Please, Charles. Don’t be stupid.” Dylan watched me, fear plain on his face.
“Your dad is dead. That’s all I can tell you. How he died isn’t important.”
“It is to me,” I growled. “If you didn’t kill him, it makes no sense why you won’t tell me who did.” I half admired Charles’s reckless bravery and pitied him for being a fool. Hank wasn’t going to go easy on him. He’d wish he were dead halfway through. Hank was a brutal, disgusting person, but he always got the job done.
“You wouldn’t be able to punish those who killed your father anyway. It’s impossible.” Charles avoided my gaze. “If someone has to pay, then I’ll do that.”
“I wouldn’t be able to punish them?” I frowned.
“No.”
“How is that possible?” I asked.
“It just is.”
Dylan frowned. “Was it the Ancients who killed them?”
