“That’s not what I meant.”

Straightening, I crossed my arms. “Whatdidyou mean, Gunner?”

“I’m fucking this up.” He scratched the back of his head with a sheepish look. “I’m just pretty much asking where we’re going from here, guys. We can’t stay here in case there are more from Clan Corrus following the fucker we just killed.”

“Let’s eat real quick and go,” Eliseo piped in.

“Yeah, that sounds like a good plan.” Reed wiped his hand on his pants and took a swig of water.

Grabbing the meat off the roast, I tried to divide the food between all six of us. The men shoved the meat in their mouths quickly, chewing as they grabbed their things to be brought back into the RV.

Climbing back into the vehicle, I let the guys help Samuel in.

“Remi, are you still awake? Here’s a little bit of food. We’re going to head out again soon.”

She uncovered her head and sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes puffy from her tears. “Where are we going?”

I handed her the meat and she took small bites.

“A nice old woman told me about a place that might give us a home. I don’t know if it’s true. We have to get there first.”

“We’ll get there. The boys and I will make sure of it. How are you feeling?” Samuel barged in.

“Remi,” I said.

Samuel smiled through his pain, limping and landing on the bed next to her with his left leg sticking out. “Remi. That’s a beautiful name. How are you feeling?”

The girl in question crawled into his lap and wrapped her arm around him again, laying her head on his chest. My heart made a little somersault at the sight. She was good for him. She would help take his mind off Hannah’s betrayal.

Leaving the back of the RV to give them a moment of privacy, I walked towards the center where Eliseo sat.

“They good?” he asked.

“Yeah, they’re good.”

“Sit next to me.”

He pulled me into his lap again and I started to unstrap his prosthetic. He leaned back, groaning in relief as I pulled off the fabric covering his stump. His skin was red and angry looking. I was surprised he hadn’t mentioned anything.

“You need to give your leg a rest,” I chastised him as my hands began to massage and soothe his skin.

“Fuck, that feels good.”

“Keep your dick in your pants, Eliseo. I’m tired of that shit near me,” Gunner yelled from the driver's side. Reed groaned and ran his hand down his face before looking out the passenger side window.

“I’ll rest when I’m dead,” he told me before turning to the guys and saying, “It’s not my fault it slips in.”

Reed choked and Gunner grumbled under his breath as he opened the window to lean out, slamming on the gas to drive us north towards what could possibly be a new life ahead of us.

Epilogue

Eliseo

“So, you’ve been changing?” Gunner interrogated.

“Yeah, you can say that.”

“It fucking makes sense. It all makes sense now. That’s why they can’t fucking stay off each other,” Reed ran his hand down his face and rubbed his temples.
