“I don’t smell anything,” Samuel said.
“Because you probably fucking stink to high heaven, too,” Gunner replied.
The guys chuckled as we pulled off the road and half a mile into a cluster of trees. Their sense of smell hadn’t enhanced like mine. It was strange. Was I just going out of my mind?
We jumped out and threw some of the shrubbery around it to camouflage it even more.
“If anything, we can steal their gas.”
“If anything, we could just steal their damn RV. The Humvee is busted to shit from that last bloodsucker. I can barely see through the front windshield.”
The guys bickered amongst themselves about what we should do. I pulledSilicloser to me as we walked back to the location.
“Sili, what else do you smell?”
She gave me a confused look but replied, “Wet moss to the left.”
“Me, too.”
She stared at me in confusion before her brows raised and her eyes widened. “What does this mean?”
“I don’t fucking know yet, but the crazy doc’s been doing shit to us we don’t know about, knocking us unconscious. Once we found out, we never let him do it again, but who knows what kind of shit he put into us while we were out cold?”
“How come the other guys aren’t showing any changes?”
“I’ve been thinking about that. When I slammed my fist into that fucker’s face back at Ashborne, my body closed my biggest wound on my knuckles and turned it into scratches.”
She stopped and grabbed my hand, turning it this way and that to investigate. Her little fingers fluttered over the semi healed flesh.
“I-is it—”
“Your blood,Sili. You’ve been changing. Getting hornier. After I got a taste of you, I started feeling the same. It probably caused a chain reaction of some sort, or became a catalyst for…” I motioned my hands to my body. “This.”
“Does that mean you’re…?
“What are you lovebirds whispering about over there? We got shit to do, keep it in your pants, Eliseo!”
The men had already walked ahead of us. Shaking my head subtly to letSiliknow to drop it for now, we caught up and made it back to the main road.
Chapter 15
Fitri
Was Eliseo like me now? That wouldn’t make any sense, because I was made through conception with one parent being a bloodsucker. So why would that make him change on his own? Unless…
A memory popped up into my head as we walked.
He walked over with a few more masks and smiled with yellow-tinted teeth. “There’s something in the air, my friend. Something in the air. I’m not positive yet but in the meantime, wear these. Who knows what kind of stuff comes off decayed wings. If my assumption is correct, vampires as we know it originated from an airborne virus.”
I turned my head to look at Eliseo, wondering what the hell crazy Otis injected him with, and if our mission was the catalyst to his change, rather than me. He was not looking at me but staring straight ahead with the men at the RV with their weapons raised.
Reed knocked on the door and plastered himself to the side of the vehicle with his head out of the line of sight of the window. Gunner hid around the bottom corner near the front half of the RV while Samuel, Eliseo and I stood in front of the door in plain sight.
The barrel of a rifle gun came out of the door first, pointing at Eliseo, then a half-naked old man with his pants undone. “What do you want? Who the fuck are you?”
Reed knocked the gun from his hand and elbowed him in the face, knocking him down the ground where Gunner quickly put his knee on his back and tied his arms from behind.
Samuel jumped over the old man’s body and went to clear the inside of the RV. Feminine screams made my legs automatically move as I ran in after him. Jumping into the side door, I was met with a small kitchen area. To my left, all the way in the back, was a woman huddled around a teenager in the farthest corner. Their eyes were full of fear, staring at Samuel, who continued to look around the RV, investigating what was inside. His gun was pointed down, but his large presence could be intimidating.
