Chapter

Fifty-Six

F ocusing back on Ebony, I frowned. “I need some time to pack my things. Then, we can leave for the city.”

“No!” Marcus sounded so weak and I had to look away.

“Done. Go in, get your stuff, and my brothers will drive you wherever you need to go. Keep in mind, they will overpower you. They will make sure Alpha Genesis gets his little Omega if you aren’t gone within twelve hours.”

Patting Mason, he looked up at me. I pushed him to the door and I stepped in after him. All I wanted to do was cry. My legs wanted to give out and all I wanted to do was crumble into a ball. Marcus was completely incapacitated and I had no one to save me right.

“Uncle Colt?”

Smiling down at Mason, I took a quick breath. “Can you help me? I need to get a few things packed.”

“Are you…really leaving? What about Uncle Mar? He was poisoned by her! He…”

Getting down to his level, I took his hands in mine. “You were so brave and I am so proud of you. What you did for your sisters and then being so strong while Marcus was weak. You did good, Mason.”

His eyes filled with tears. “But…”

I shook my head. “There are times, where we have to decide when to fight our battles or when we need to take more time to assess the situation.”

“We…can’t fight this one.”

Nodding, I rubbed his head. “Not this time kiddo. I can’t. Not right now. Right now, I have to do as the crazy lady asks. You thought, you have the important job.”

“Me?”

“You need to get the family involved. You need to tell them everything that happened, Mas. They need to know so they can bring the army in.”

He nodded. “Fight the battle another day.”

“Exactly. What I need to do, is buy you some time. So I need to follow her directions for now. I promise though, one it’s safe, I’ll be back for Marcus and for all of you.”

“Okay.”

Getting up, I felt myself start to sway, but I caught myself on the countertop. “I need to grab a few things. Stay with me, okay, Mas?”

“Yeah.”

The lightheadedness passed and I walked up the stairs. Mason was at me heels and I threw open the bedroom door. Grabbing Marcus saddle bag that he used for flying, I tossed a bunch of my clothes into it. Going into the bathroom, I grabbed all my items from there too.

“Mason, can you grab the red blanket and bring it over here.”

Once he handed it to me, I stuffed it into the bag. Since it was so large, it fit a lot of what I needed. I did grab a few of Marcus’ shirts, as well as a couple of things for our little girl. Just in case. I hated the thought but if this couldn’t get fixed in time, I would really be on my own. Reaching down into my pocket, I pulled out my phone.

Turning up the volume, Mike was screaming my name.

“I can hear you now. I’m in the bedroom.”

“Colton Fisher! I swear to every fucking god out there, I can’t leave you alone for one second!”

I sighed. “It wouldn’t have mattered if the two of you were here. You couldn’t have taken them all.”

“I know. I have the cameras pulled up. What do you want to do?”

“For now, follow her directions. I can’t put our little girl at risk. I just…can’t…”

He growled over the line. “Fine! Fuck! I hate this!”

I chuckled but it started to have an edge as I fought back tears. “So do I. I need you though. I need to be gone.”

“Alright. Let me think.”

I sat back on the bed, the bag packed with almost everything. There were a few things downstairs I needed. Reaching out, I held Mason’s hand. I could hear some of the panthers come into the house and I wanted to scream at them. Instead, I closed my eyes and listened to the phone.

“Uncle Colt?”

Looking up, Mason was near tears. “Is this my fault?”

“Oh, Mas. No. Not at all. This has nothing to do with you. Literally, nothing. This has to do with Marcus and I. Not everyone is happy that we mated. One of those is the crazy panther who thinks that your uncle is hers.”

“She hates kids.”

Nodding, I sighed. “She does. She’s not very good for your Uncle, is she?”

He shook his head fervently.

“Between you and me, your uncle keep asking me to have two hundred kiddos.”

“Two hundred!”

I nodded. “Imagine if he said that to her.”

“I think she would run for the hills.”

Shrugging, I sat back in the bed. “You might be right. Maybe we can use that against her.”

Mason chuckled and I got what I was looking for. He’d been through enough. This was never his fault and I never wanted him to think that. This was Ebony’s fault and if ever managed to get my paws on her after this, I would kill her with my own bare teeth.

“Okay, Colt. I have a plan.”

“No plane?”

He huffed. “Who do you take me for? No. You’re taking a dragon express.”

Snorting, I covered my mouth. “You’re kidding. We joked about that.”

“It’s the best way. Going to have to fork over a lot of cash for their silence but I think it will be fine. I’m going to give them the details. You’ll meet them where you made the stupid decision to freeze to death.”

I chortled. “Got it. We need to get Mason back to him family, Mike. I can’t don’t it.”

“I know. Sabrina and I will meet you there. We’ll take the kid. Make sure that he gets back home. I’ll send a message out to Beau.”

Mason hugged me tight. “No! I don’t want to leave you! You…you made everything better!”

Hugging him, I nuzzled his cheek. “I know, Mas. I don’t want to go either. But remember, we have a job to do. Mike and Rin are my best friends. My very best friends. They will get you to your family. Where you need to do you job so that we can will the war, right?”

He nodded but tightened his arms around me.

Running my hand through his hair, I hated pulling him back, but we didn’t have the time. I also didn’t want the crazy she- panther changing her mind and killing the both of us instead. It probably would be too messy with the Council if someone died but I wasn’t going to change her levelheadedness in all this.

Grabbing my bag, I made sure that Mason was close as we walked down the stairs. Ignoring the six or so panthers mulling about, I grabbed the books I got for Christmas from Mr. Alford as well as a few of the snacks and the entire loaf of bread that Mrs. Alford made me. Mason chuckled as he helped me shove everything in and zip it up.

“I’m ready.” I annoyed and Ebony turned around on the couch.

“Oh good! My brothers will take you anywhere you want to go.”

My eyes moved to where Marcus was currently laid out. He was conscious but he didn’t look like he could move. Looking down, I decided to change asking.

“Can I say goodbye?”

Ebony cackled but it cut off as her eyes turned back. “You think I’m going to let you touch my mate? After all you did to steal him away? I think not. Leave Colton. Take the pipsqueak with you. I don’t want to smell you in my house anymore.” She leaned over Marcus and dragged her nails down his bare chest. “It’s that right, mate. We don’t want that dirty ol’ Omega in here anymore.”

I couldn’t watch. Turning around, I grabbed my bag and Mason. Her two bother were waiting for us at the front door. Somehow, there now were six cars pulled into the driveway. I hadn’t seen any of them from the road and I wondered where they were hidden. One opened up the door of an all back SUV and I got in. Mason got in after me and the door shut.

The two of them got into the front seats and pulled out. Neither of them spoke until they got to the main road.

“Where to?”

Holding up my phone, I rattled off the address. They put it into the navigation and pulled out. Neither of them said anything as we drove towards the city. Mason leaned against me and I wrapped my arm around him. Eventually, he fall asleep. It was too much for him and I hummed the song that Sabrina would sing when I wasn’t feeling well. I expected the two brutes up front to tell me to shut up but they said nothing.

“Do you mind if I roll down the window a little? I’m feeling nauseous.”

The one driving grunted and I figured that was as good of a yes that I was going to get. Rolling it own a little, just enough that I could breathe in the cool air, but not enough to wake up Mason. Silently, we wove through the city and I felt worse the closer we got. Tears filled my eyes but I dashed them away. I could cry later. It wouldn’t do me any good right now.

After about an hour and a half, the car slowed and they pulled up in front of the all brick warehouse. The two of them looked at the building and then back at me.

“Not here. It’s on the side.” I pointed ahead. “My friends car is right there. The one who is getting me out of here.”

They nodded and parked. I roused Mason and he sat up, rubbing his eyes.

“Colt?”

“Come on. We need to get out”

He nodded and I opened up the door. Getting out first, I helped him out before grabbing the bag. Mike got out of Sabrina’s car but I knew Sabrina was probably keeping low in the back. Mike bared his teeth at the two panthers who got out as well.

“Mike, stop. They are makings sure I do leave.”

He threw his arms around me and pulled me into a hug. I dropped the bag and wrapped my arms around him. My head fell to his shoulders and try as I might, I sobbed into his shoulder.

“Don’t worry. You won’t be alone. I’ll still be connected to you.”

Nodding, I stepped back and handed him my phone. He took out the SIM card and broke it. My phone was next as he broke it in half.

“It didn’t even last three months.” I lamented my new phone.

He snorted. “Oh hush. There will be a new phone and card waiting for you. Along with a new laptop. I’m not going to bother giving you one now.”

Nodding, I squatted down and hugged Mason again tightly. “Mas, this is Mike. He is going to help you fight the war, okay?”

Mason nodded. “I have my job.”

“You do. Mike is a tiger. He has been protecting me for many years and he is still doing it now. You will be under his protection too. At least until you get home. Got it?”

He nodded again, far stronger this time. “I got it.”

“I know you do, Mas. I know you do.”

I hugged him one more time before I pushed him over to Mike. Mike held up a fist which Mason bumped.

“Sorry. I’m super awkward. I like nerdy stuff and looking at screens. I promise though, I got you.” Mike smiled and I knew, one day, he would be such a good dad.

“What the hell is going on here?”

I looked down the alley and a female shifter was pulling on a dress. Mike smirked and pointed his thumb at the girl.

“I’d like you to meet your ride.”

Looking from him to the girl, tossing back her curly brown hair, I hoped he was joking. “Are you…serious?”
