COLTON
“ Y ou going to be okay?” Mike’s voice came over the line as I drive Marcus’ car down the highway.
“Yeah. I’m just going to go home. Marcus has a security system there. Once you get back to your computer, keep me updated. If I need to make a trip into town, I can. I just…I feel like I’ll only get in the way.”
Mike sighed. “It’s not that you would get in the way, but…”
“I would. I can’t shift. I can’t run really. There isn’t much I can do for him in a standoff with a pack. Even in a fight with Ebony right now, I would lose. I’d only end up fucking something up. Marcus can take care of it.” My hands tightened around the steering wheel. “I know he can.”
“He didn’t tell you how bad it was, did he?”
I didn’t answer Mike’s question. Part of me was pissed at Marcus. Had I known that it was this bad with Ebony and her entire pack, I feel like we could have avoided all of this. We could have worked with Mike and got the council to agree to the restraining order. At worst, we could move. He had his job here but I had a feeling that wasn’t the reason he didn’t tell me. Either way, it frustrated me to no end.
“Colt?”
“I don’t want to talk about it right now. Not until Marcus is home and we find out what we need to do.”
Mike sighed. “Alright.”
Sighing, I looked at the time. We’d left the store right after Marcus but even speeding it was over two hours away. Today would have been a really good day. Now all I hoped is that Mason and Marcus came home to me unharmed. Even that seemed like asking a lot with Ebony’s break downs she was having.
“I’m pulling into the driveway now. Call me when you get back to the dorm.”
“Will do. I’ll get everything up and we can make a plan.”
My phone went dark and I sighed. Pulling off the highway, I made drive to the house and parked in front of the house. Leaning my head back, I closed my eyes. The entire drive I felt nauseous but I didn’t know if it was the situation or our little girl. Either way. I felt tired and gross.
Getting out of the car, I shut the door and fished for the keys in my pocket. Opening up the front door, I shut it behind me. My eyes narrowed as I looked around. Something was off. It was too cold in here. Leaning to the side, I saw that the back door was open. We definitely didn’t leave it open when we left.
Stepping through the house quietly, I listened but I didn’t hear anything or anyone in the house. However, getting to door, I realized what was wrong. Stepping out of the door and onto the deck, I surveyed the yard.
There were at least thirty shifters sprinkled around and in the trees. They were stalking the house it looked like and a few of them were shifted as well. My eyes swept back to the main group of about ten or so shifters in the center of the yard. Ebony was smiling, her fingers tangled in Marcus’ hair. He looked sick and pale, a blanket covering his shoulders. He was completely naked and his skin was red. Mason was sobbing to the left of him, being held by one of the panther shifters.
“Ebony.”
Her face twisted with a sadistic grin. “Colton! We’ve been waiting for you.”
“I’m sure you have.” I looked down at Marcus for a moment. “What’s this about?”
She sighed. “You see. Marcus came to save his little nephew but he left you behind.”
“I’m not the one you want.”
“Well, Marcus is already mine. I can get him anytime. It’s you that I needed. You were the one I needed to get to. He was hiding and protecting you this whole time but now, he can’t even protect himself.” She ran her fingers along his face.
My wolf wanted to come forward but I couldn’t let them. We were outnumbered. Outmatched. The cards weren’t in my hands and my strings were pulled tight. The situation was exactly why I didn’t want to go with Marcus.
“What did you do to Mar?”
“Oh, don’t worry. Just a little poison. Makes him human for a time. He’s easier to handle that way. I needed him like this so he would cooperate and we could… talk .” Her tone was so much more malicious.
I nodded. My mind was going a mile a minute trying to figure out her end game. The cards that she had in her hands right now; Ebony was missing a piece. Either that or I was missing something she was holding behind her back.
“What do you want from me?” I reached into my pockets, grabbing my phone. “You say talk, but wouldn’t it be easier to just…kill me now?”
She sighed. “Honestly, no. It was a deal with the Council we made. No bodies. I thought about it. I wanted to. Wrap my fingers around your neck. Squeeze as I watched the life leave your eyes. For having the audacity to try and take what’s mine.”
My fingers pressed my emergency number as I turned down the volume completely. “Why talk to me though? Marcus is currently in the palm of your hand. He’s too weak to fight and he is all yours. From where I am standing, you’ve already won.”
Ebony threw her head back and laughed. “I knew you were smart! You always were so damn bright in school. The teachers sung your praises but I didn’t know if they were overhyping you. It seems not.”
I narrowed my eyes. “While I appreciate the compliment, I don’t know why you wanted to speak to me.”
“I want you gone, Colton. I want you to leave Marcus and I alone. I want to be able to be with my mate. I want us to live together and be happy without any interference. That’s what I want. You are in the way of my future.”
This was bad. I didn’t know if I should push my luck. I didn’t know what to do. Marcus being down, my own strength wouldn’t be enough. Getting myself out of here was seeming more impossible. Maybe if I could shift. Even then it would be coin toss with how many panthers were stalking around the house.
Ebony was watching me with fascination. Her smile grew wider and wider as she probably enjoyed me trying to pick out any holes or solutions to get out of. At least, for now, the only thing I could think of was stand my ground. The very ground I wanted to collapse into. My wolf whined, trying to reach out to Marcus but we couldn’t feel him at all.
“Why would I leave?”
“What?”
I stared down at my mate, pain hitting me with every scared heartbeat. “Why would I leave? Marcus and I are marked. We are mates. I don’t see any reason I need to leave. You may have him now, but I so no reason to move out of your way without a fight.”
She smirked and nodded. “You know, that’s fair. I would want to fight for my mate too. Which I’m doing. So, I can understand that. We are the same, you and I.”
“We are not the same.” I growled low. “I can promise you that.”
It didn’t phase her as she sighed. “I started to have you followed. Once I saw the glances Marcus was giving you. I was worried. As any mate would be. We weren’t marked and I worried is affections were straying.”
“You had me followed.”
“It was easy. It was also equally as easy to speak to some of your…acquaintances.”
My eyes narrowed. “You didn’t hurt…”
“Oh no, no. We had to…ask some questions…make sure that we got answers. However, the best answers we got were from this wonderful dragon shifter. Apparently, you two weren’t just acquaintances.”
I waited, my heart ready to pound a hole through my chest.
“Doctor Raine Cardiff. You know her, right? So wonderful. Great reviews. Turns out…she doesn’t hold patient confidentiality over getting her scales removed one by one.”
There is was. The lead weight that dropped in my stomach. I tried not to say anything. Tried not to let anything show on my face. Except that she threw her head back and laughed.
“Suddenly, it all made sense! Why Marcus chose you over me! How you managed to turn his head. How you won the first battle.” Her arms flung out and I watched as Marcus swayed before he fell, leaning against her leg. “Colton Fisher is an Omega! Not just an Omega though. You didn’t just seduce my mate as an Omega with that asshole of yours. No, you locked him down, didn’t you. You made sure he had to mate you by getting knocked the fuck up.”
My eyes watered, but I didn’t move. The fact that she knew this was the worst possible scenario right now. I made the mistake of looking down at Marcus and seeing the tears fall down his cheeks as well. Looking back up at what was easily becoming my new living nightmare, I held her manic stare.
“That’s why you haven’t shifted and ran yet. You’re pregnant. We had you the moment you stepped out of that car. You have no backup. No support. No one to save poor little Omega Colton. You thought you won. You did win a battle or two, I’ll admit. But you won’t win the war. I will. Because Marcus is mine.”
“So, you know my secret. Now what? What does this change? You can’t kill me, you said it yourself.”
Ebony cackled. “It does though! It changes everything! Imagine what Alpha Genesis would do if he found out his favorite little toy was an Omega!”
I felt the blood leave my face and she laughed even harder.
“He pulled the little stunt at the school all for you. All to get you back. Right now, you’re at my mercy, Colton Fisher. Because one call, and suddenly, you are in the arms of your beloved Alpha. Imagine, how happy he will be! I mean…” Her voiced dropped and she shrugged. “The pregnancy is going to have to go. No one wants some random shifters kid. That would be terrible. Still. You’d be able to have a bunch of pups with your old Alpha.”
Shit. The tears fell down and I was struggling to breathe. Fear shook me to my core. Her pure delight as I tried to stop from breaking down made it even worse. Not to mention Marcus crying as he leaned into her side. Ebony ran her hands through his hair.
“Why isn’t he here now with you? Why didn’t you just invite him to the party and hand me over now if that was your goal?”
She clicked her tongue. “Colton, weren’t you listening. That isn’t my goal.”
Blinking, the barely hit my cheeks. “You want me gone.”
“ Exactly . I want you gone, Colton. Not within reach of the Alford’s. They could easily save you when they found out that Alpha Genesis has you. That doesn’t suit my goal.”
“So, in exchange for me, disappearing, you will keep my secret.”
Nodding, she petted Marcus and I knew it was solely to antagonize me. “Exactly. I don’t really care about you being an Omega, Colton. I don’t even care that you’re pregnant. I hate kids and I don’t want them. So you can keep that little thing with you. Do the single father thing. Whatever.” She made a dismissive motion. “I just don’t want anyone to find you. I want you to disappear. So that I can’t find you. Alpha Genesis can’t find you and more importantly, my Marcus and his family can’t find you.”
“I want Mason. You used him to get to Marcus. You have him. Give me Mason.”
She scoffed, motioning to her pack member. He let Mason go and Mason looked at Marcus for a moment before he raced to me. His head buried into my side and I held him to me. I stepped forward with my left, making sure I was angled to cover him.
“Aww…look at that. You’re already in parent mode. You’ll be such a good daddy.” Ebony smiled brightly. “So, what will be be Colton? Will you disappear and live out your life with your little pup? Or, will you let Alpha Genesis love you to your dying day?”
“How long do I have to leave?”
She hummed, tapping her chin. “Twelve hours. I’ll give you twelve hours. My bothers will happily escort you wherever you want to go. I don’t care how you leave. Plane, train, car, rope, boat, whatever you want. I just want your entire existence wiped away.”
“Colt…” Marcus wasn’t looking at me but he was still crying.
Ebony grabbed his chin and brought his face up. I winced feeling the rippling pain as she kissed him, shoving her tongue into his mouth. After she finished, her hand came across his face and fell over into the snow. Tears filled my eyes as I looked from Marcus to Ebony’s livid face.
“You will not say someone else’s name, mate! You are mine!”
Closing my eyes, I bit into my lip until I drew blood. Ebony sighed and clicked her tongue. All I could do now was buy time. Buy time for the Alfords to get him away. My hands were tied. I couldn’t risk out little girl. Not after everything. My heart hurt as my wolf howled in pain.
“Look, Colton, I don’t have all night. I want to go in our home and enjoy our time together as mates. So either I’ll wrap you up in a bow for your Alpha or…”
“I need my friends help. In order to disappear. He’s the only one who can do it.”
Marcus coughed. “No!”
“Oh, that little nerd that threw me out the window?”
I nodded. “He was prepared already for me to disappear. I need his help. He…he take the threat of Alpha Genesis seriously as well.”
She hummed. “I guess. You can speak with him. But he’s the only one.” Ebony smiled. “Does that mean we have a deal?”
Looking down at Mason, I ran my hands through his hair. “We do.”
