Chapter

Fifty-Three

“ A re you sure this is okay?”

Colton had the scarf pulled up to his nose and I could feel his nerves were sky high. I thought this would be good for him but I was starting to rethink it. It was going to make him nervous but I hoped he would relax eventually. Pulling him into my side, I lifted his chin up and kissed him.

“If I thought you were in danger, I wouldn’t have brought you. Trust me.”

His shoulders fell and he leaned against me. We were in the elevator going up a floor of these multi-level shopping center. The second level was the one I had planned on us going to. It was an impromptu shopping trip but the school shut down today for repairs to the magic devices across campus. Therefore, I thought it would be perfect to take a trip to the other city, despite the drive, and do some shopping.

The doors opened and Colton gasped. Sabrina and Mike were standing in front of the elevators. We stepped out and Colton hugged Sabrina while I shook hands with Mike. I’d asked them out last minute as well but they were willing to surprise Colton. I hoped this would bring down his nerves a little as well.

“What are you doing here?”

Sabrina scoffed. “What do you mean? We are here to help! What else would we be doing here?”

Colton looked back at me and mouthed thank you as Sabrina pulled him down the walkway. Mike shoved his hands into his pocked and shook his head.

“I am happy to do this for Colt but if this gives Rin baby fever, I’m going make sure I send her over to your house every day once that pup is born.”

I chuckled and nodded. “Deal.”

Raising my eyebrow, I caught the different scent coming off him. “Finally tied her down.”

To my surprise, Mike grinned goofily. “I did. Christmas Day.”

“Did she stay the night?”

His head cocked to the side. “Yes? How did you know?”

“Colt said something about it. Said that you would have if she stayed the night instead of going back to her pack.”

“He knows me too well sometimes.” Mike chuckled.

I stopped though, holding out my hand again. “Congratulations.”

He took my hand and gave me a harder shake. “Thank you. Don’t worry, we will still be third wheels.”

Looking at Sabrina taking Colton around the different sets for nurseries, I sighed. “Yeah. I guess you’re right.”

We chortled and followed them through the entire floor. Lauren had done a bunch of the remodel for the room but we needed furniture now. I brought him to the furniture store to pick out everything for the nursery. Sabrina was weaving him through every different type of setup they had and I realized she was exactly what Colton needed. He’d probably get overwhelmed halfway through but with her, she was too confident to allow that.

“Mar.”

I walked through the different rooms set up until I came around to the one Colton was standing in. It was very cute. More neutral than I thought he would like, but that didn’t mean we couldn’t add a couple times that made it more girly. His hand brushed the top of the crib and I smiled.

“This one?”

He looked up and nodded. “This one. With the matching changing table and dresser.”

It had little moons and stars carved into the wood. The whole room setup had different moons and stars from pillows to sheets to even a clock on the wall. Colton did seem to really like the night sky. So it didn’t surprise me that this was what he liked.

“Got it. I’ll make sure they know to deliver it to the house.”

His smile was so sweet and innocent. “Thank you”

“Go pick out other things. You have the list from Lauren on your phone, right?”

He nodded and I was about to call Sabrina back when my phone rang.

“Take it. It’s your mom, right?”

It was funny that he could tell between my different ringtones now. Pulling it up, I answered it. Before I could get anything out, my mom’s panicked voice came over the line.

“Mar, they took his. They took him and I don’t…I don’t know where he is.”

My blood ran cold and I two steps out of the room. “What do you mean he’s gone? Who is gone, Mom?”

“Mason! Marcus, Mason got kidnapped.”

I wanted to kick something. Mike was just ahead of us and he pulled Sabrina behind him, his eyes dark as he looked back at me. Colton came next to me and held my arm. Smoke was coming out of my nose and I felt my horns start to grow.

“Mom, start from the beginning.”

“The kids were waiting for Keith to pick them up from school. He was late. Mason called me and asked for me to pick them up. So I did. I drove down to the school but there were cops everywhere.” She was crying now and it wasn’t helping. “I…I got out and I saw Ellen and Audrey. They…they told me that someone drove by and tried to grab them all. Except that Mason had told them to run. They grabbed Mason as he fought to stop them from going after his sisters while they ran. They took him…”

I grabbed Colton’s arm and I tried to use him to ground me. “Who? Have they said? Is there anything? Did Keith get anything?”

“I…I can’t get ahold of Keith.”

“What?” I roared over the line. “His son was taken and you can’t get ahold of him? Did the cops call?”

She was sobbing now. “No one can get ahold of him. Your father left to go to their house. He hasn’t called. Marcus…what if…what if something happens.”

“Nothing will happen, Mom. We will get him back. Give me a minute. I’m going to hang up for a second so you can get Dad’s call.”

“Yeah. Okay. Call me back.”

I hung up and stared at my phone. Slowly, Colton took it out of my hand. He probably knew it was going to get cracked if I held onto any long. Stepping in front of me, Colton took my head in his hands.

“Talk to me, Mar. What do they know?”

“Nothing. They know nothing. He’s gone, Colt. We have no idea took him or what they want.”

Closing my eyes, I tried to breath but it wasn’t helping. The fact that Keith was MIA as well made everything worse. Colton’s hands left me and he turned, motioning Mike forward. He stepped up but looked warily at me.

Colton’s tone changed as he looked at me. “Marcus, what is the name of their school?”

“It’s Emerald Forest Elementary School.”

He nodded. “Mike, Mason got kidnapped. Out front of the school.”

Mike pulled out his phone and walked over, sitting in one of the rocking chairs. He leaned forward though, typing on his phone. His eyes were dark as he typed with a speed I didn’t think was possible on such a small screen. Colton rubbed my arm as he watched Mike. Sabrina came forward as well, standing behind her mate.

“It was a van.”

My eyes widened and I looked at Colton. However, he didn’t even seem the least bit impressed. In fact, he actually rolled his eyes.

“Mike, please. Do better.”

“Yeah, yeah. Give me a minute.”

What was happening right now?

Colton laced his fingers in mine. “He’s managed to find the vehicle, so he can not only trace who it belongs to but where they went after they grabbed Mason. If anyone is going to find them, it’s Mike. Give him a minute. Even though that’s slow.”

Mike scoffed. “Yeah. I know. There is shitty reception in here.” He paused and then cursed. “Found them.”

“Where?” I asked, trying to keep as calm as I could.

“The mall.” He looked up. “They are at the Main Street mall. I need my computer though to access the mall cameras. I can’t do it from my phone.”

Shaking my head, I let out a breath. “No, that’s enough.”

“Marcus.” Mike was staring at me. “The van is registered to the Dark Night pack.”

“Fucking damn it.” I roared and I felt my shirt start to rip.

Colton pulled my head down and this time he kissed me. Suddenly, everything stopped. My dragon, as livid as he was, wouldn’t hurt Colton. He immediately recoiled and let me take back control. My hands held Colton’s hips softly and I pulled back. His eyes were bright as he looked up at me.

“Go. Fly. I’ll take the car back.”

“It’s probably a trap.” Mike chimed up. “They know you will find them. They are banking on it. I’d rather have eyes on the place…”

I shook my head. “We don’t have time. That’s my…”

“Son…Marcus. He was your son. It’s okay. Be careful.” Colton stepped back but I could see him fighting tears.

“I’ll be back. I promise. I’m not going to let them win.”

Colton nodded but he wrapped his arms around himself. I wanted to comfort him but I needed to save Mason. The fact that this was Ebony’s pack meant that it was my fault. She was after me. Kissing him one more time, I started to jog out of the store.

“Protect him, Mike. Colton’s safety is in your hands right now.”

“Got it. Go get him. We will try and follow up with you.”

Nodding, I threw open the door for the emergency exit. Jumping over the raining, I fell the two stories, landing on my feet and breaking the concrete under me. Throwing open the door to the outside, I raced a little ways from the building before I let my dragon take over. He roared, shifting and letting out a huge bout of fire as we shot into the air.

Cutting into the air, we shot eastward back toward home. We pushed our speed as fast as we could possibly go. I breathed out smoke as the cold air flowed over our scales. My phone was still with Colton, so hopefully my mom would call and he could speak with her. It took me a half hour to get back over the city but I ignored the rules for not flying in the main part of the city.

Weaving through building, I spied the mall and landed on to roof. Shifting, I kept my draconic form. It was a form that was between a human and a dragon. It took years of patience and practice. On top of that, it was only something that Alpha’s could do. Still, I crashed through the glass ceiling of the mall.

They knew I was coming. Maybe not this soon but I wasn’t about to give them an extra leg up. Sure enough, the mall had been taken over. There was none of the usual shoppers. Instead, the whole place was crawling with panthers. My dragon roared and we let out a stream of blue flames.

“Now, now, Marcus. You wouldn’t want any harm to come to your sweet little nephew now would you?” Ebony was siting on the playground, her hand shifted as her claws pressed into Mason’s throat.

He had tears streaks down his face but his eyes were defiant. Despite the situation, he wasn’t letting his fear take over. I’d never been so damn proud of him. Jumping over the railing, I landed down on the first floor. A few of her pack members moved in closer and I growled.

“The fuck do you think you are doing?”

“I needed to figure out something to get your attention. You obvious have your head in Colton’s ass a little too much to see how terrible he is for you. So I needed to give you a little wake-up call.”

Growling, I stepped around, keeping my distance but getting a better look at her. “But hurting a child?”

“Well, him getting hurt really is up to you. Not me. I have wonderful control, but you…well…let’s see how much his life is worth to you.”

“I’m not playing these games, Ebony.”

She threw her head back and laughed. “If we are playing a game, then we are playing for keeps. Except, we are missing Player two. You’re simply just the prize.” Her eyes turned dark. “Where is Fisher?”
