Page 31 of Loving My Omega (The Perfect Designation Trilogy #2)
Chapter
Thirty-One
W e had a half hour left of Professor Davidson’s class and I sighed, cracking my neck. My stomach was growling, making Sabrina giggle but I couldn’t help it. The professor refused to allow snacks in the room during class and we already had our break. I flipped the page for my notes and started writing again.
Sabrina leaned closer and whispered, “Make a copy of your notes for me and send them to my email.”
I had told her I wasn’t going to be in class anymore but I glared at her. Just because I wasn’t going to be in class didn’t mean she could just sneak off with my notes. She probably wouldn’t be the only one now that I wasn’t going to be on campus and I wouldn’t be going to the group study sessions. I’d already promised to send notecards with questions to her for those study sessions.
“I’m not sending you a photo of my notes, Rin.”
She snorted. “Not a photo. Just a copy. You could do one completely for me. Color-coded like you do yours.”
“I’m not doing a second notebook!”
My voice rose a little higher than I meant, and we both glanced up at Professor Davidson. He was nose deep in paragraph five of the chapter, ignoring the impressive amount of his students currently asleep.
“Please.”
“No.”
“But I’ll get you anything. You name it. I’ll give Angelino’s every day for a year.”
“Tempting, but no.”
“Extra breadsticks every time.”
Rolling my eyes, I shook my head. “No, Rin.”
“Colt!” She whined.
I chuckled but the entire class was interrupted by the phone going off. Everyone seemed confused. I think most, like me, thought the phones that were scattered around the rooms were props. They looked like they were from the eights with a cord nearing the floor but not one time had I seen one ring. Professor Davidson seemed perturbed by the interruption, but still walked over and answered it.
“What?” He had an impressive growl when he was irritated.
The entire class watched his face go from irritated, to shocked, then a bit panicked. Above us, lights started to flash and Sabrina grabbed my arm. I’d heard there was a silent alarm system through the school but I’d never seen it. Sure enough, the lights blinked and I sucked in a breath.
“Understood.” He hung up the phone. “Colton, grab your stuff, quickly.”
My heart sunk. What was going on? Why was I being called out? Part of me wondered if this was something Marcus was doing but the fact that the silent alarms were going on, that meant something far bigger than Marcus being mad. Pulling on my jacket, I grabbed my bag and stepped down the stairs to Professor Davidson, still standing by the phone.
He took my arm and I realized something was wrong. His hand was shaking and I could tell he was trying to keep it together for his students. The hair on arm stood and my wolf was nearly the same level of panic. Leading me to the door, Professor Davidson opened up the door and stepped out with me.
In the hallway, everything looked normal other than the fact that it was eerily quiet.
“Professor, what’s going on?”
“You need to run and hid. As quickly as possible. Find someone. You can’t leave the building though. They have all the exits covered.”
My eyes widened and I felt ice fill my veins. “W-what?”
“Alpha Genesis has just stormed the campus. He has a number of warriors with him. He’s killed four security guards already. They are headed here. Colton, they are after you.”
Sheer panic and fear coursed through me. Shaking my head, I tried to breathe but my eyes filled with tears instead. I felt rooted in my spot. What was I supposed to do? What if he caught me? Everything we learned over the weekend about me came rushing back and all I wanted to do was cry.
“Profess-”
Professor Davidson pushed me down the hall towards the stairs. “Go! Now, Colton! Hide somewhere! They are coming to this building. They know what class you’re in! Hurry!”
His tone and push spurred me into action. I ran, nearly slipping on the tile. Racing up the first flight of stairs, I swung around the stairwell. Tears were rolling down my face and I wiped them on my coat.
Standing in the hallway of the second floor, I debated trying to get into one of the closed classrooms. The only problem is that they were usually locked if they weren’t being used. It would take time to check and if I couldn’t find one, I would be stuck.
My seconds of indecision cost me when I heard the main doors blast open. The sound of shattering wood and glass filled the quiet hallway. Looking over the railing, I froze as I took in the debris scattered all over the floor. There were at least four wolves, partially shifted step into the building. The last shifter that stepped in made my breath hitch.
“Check all the classrooms. The she-panther confirmed he would be here. Cover the exits. Kill anyone who resists.” He tapped one of the warriors shoulders. “You and I are going to the one he’s supposed to be in.”
It had been months since I had seen him. Somehow, looking at him now, he seemed more wild and evil. Now, suddenly, he had my life in his claws. He disappeared down the hall and I felt my knees start to give. My nightmare was actually coming to fruition. He was here for me. He was killing people because of me. Covering my mouth, I started sob.
My wolf wasn’t having it. They pushed me back, scrambling up the stairs. We stumbled a bit at the top but they pushed me forward to force me to move. It worked and I felt relief that no one was up here. Everyone was either in class or done for the day, including the teacher’s assistants. No one was here to witness me trying to hide.
I looked down the first hallway but I couldn’t down it. If it was Ebony who gave my position away, she may have told them about Marcus and I. They would look their first and there wasn’t a place I could hide in his office.
Running down the main hallway, I tried a couple of the other professor’s offices. After the fourth one being locked, I let out a choked sob. It’s wasn’t until I made it to Professor Delany’s office. She was at the far end of the middle hallway. Closing the door behind me, I locked the door and turned back to her office.
She had a standing desk so I couldn’t hid under it. Her couch was also up on feet that would show someone hiding behind it. Another sob came out, feeling like this was it. I was going to get captured and this would going to be the end of it.
My wolf refused to let me give up, urging me to find something. We couldn’t give up. We had Marcus. We had our little girl. We had our own life. It meant something. People loved us. We mattered. So, we had to find something. Figure out anything because we had to survive.
Looking at the wall, she had a few plants and a couple big bookshelves. Behind one of the larger potted plants was a large wall vent. I’d seen a similar one in Marcus’ office so it must be an end-of-the-row office feature. Going over to the vent, I inspected it. There were no screws and it looked deep enough to at least couch into.
I moved the plant aside to get access to the vent cover. It took some wiggling and getting my claws between the metal but it came off pretty smoothly. Setting it right next to hole, I stepped into the space. It was tight and if I was the extra ten pounds heavier that I needed to be, I probably wouldn’t have fit. My knees were jammed into the side, my backpack was in my lap and I wasn’t able to sit up straight but I fit.
I pulled the plant back in place before grabbing the front of the vent with my claws. Setting it back into place was tricky but I was able to get it to pop back in. There were little slits at the top of the vent that I could see through but someone could also see my hair
My arms were tight against my body and I almost growled when I felt my ears brush against the top of the vent. Not now. I didn’t need to lose control right now. Tears filled my eyes and I fumbled with the front of my backpack. My phone was in there but it was on vibrate, not silent. Turning off the vibrate, I saw a slew of messages from Mike but there wasn’t anything I could do now.
“Find him!” We have the fucking building surrounded! How hard is it to find one fucking wolf? He can’t leave. Check the second floor. We’ll take the third.”
My teeth sunk into my bottom lip as I looked up, but it was no use. Tears were pouring out of my eyes as much as the fear was. I was trying not to sob, because if I did, I’d make noise. It was nearly impossible though as a door slammed open on this floor and glass shattered.
Curling up tighter to try and no be visible through the vent, I pressed my phone against my forehead. There was no way. I’d finally found it. I found happiness and a family and people who cared about me. Marcus was my Alpha and he’d brought me into the light by showing me that I didn’t need to always hide away. Another door shattered with more glass and the sound of furniture getting thrown, making me curl up even tighter.
Squeezing my eyes shut, I tried to slow my heart and keep it quiet. It was hard when all I wanted to do was curl up and cry. If I let the terror take over, they would be able to hear my heartbeat though if they were close enough. My phone lit up and I looked down. I had to swallow a cry. It was Marcus.
Professor Dreamboat
Where are you?
Colton
Third floor
Colton
Prof Delaney’s office
Professor Dreamboat
I’m coming.
I breathed through my nose slowly as I held back my breakdown. Another glass door shattered and I jumped.
Colton
they are coming. Mar…if they find me…
Professor Dreamboat
They won’t. I’m coming.
Colton
if they do. Just know. I love you. I’ve loved you. I want us to be a family. I wanted us to run away together and have a farm with all our kids. I thought I would wait until we had our girl so you could leave still but if this is it
I stopped typing. The door next to Professor Delaney’s office shattered and exploded. I curled up in on myself, holding my phone to my chest. This was it. I was going to get caught and nothing would stop them from dragging me out. If they had me, Marcus couldn’t do anything.
“Check the next one. This wolf is somewhere.” Alpha Genesis growled.
From the vent, I could see the shadows outside the glass. The door exploded and glass flew everywhere. I curled up even more and closed my eyes, focusing on keeping my heartbeat low.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”
Marcus’ voice boomed through the floor and I almost cried out in relief. He was here. He was actually here.
“Sorry, Professor . I’m trying to find a wayward pup of mine. He’s been avoiding the requests to come home and now I have to do my duty as Alpha. I’m sure you understand.”
I felt bile rise up in my throat. My body was shaking but I held my backpack tighter. He was here but I wasn’t safe yet. Alpha Genesis was between me and Marcus. Closing my eyes, I took a silent breath to steady myself..
“I’m not aware that you have a current pack member in this building right now, Dylan .” Marcus growled.
My eyes widened. Marcus just blatantly disrespected Alpha Genesis by not calling him by his title. If one person could, it would be Marcus, on all accounts but it just wasn’t ever done.
Alpha Genesis laughed. “So you know who I’m looking for. Good, this makes this easier. Hand Colton Fisher over. He belongs back with his pack.”
“You’re not his Alpha anymore. You have not right to dictate that.”
Again Alpha Genesis laughed but it wasn’t a funny laugh. It was more annoyed with an edge to it. I couldn’t believe this was all because of me. Was this really all because they used some old semen from some dead Omega dragon. Sure, it worked but they didn’t know that. Did they think they could extract the DNA again from me? Or that somehow as a Beta I would magically birth an Omega?
“Colton is mentally unstable and he broke from the pack during an episode. He shouldn’t be left on his own. I’m sure you understand. He probably needs the most help. He’s a bit slow.”
Someone else cleared their throat. “Actually, we did two different therapy sessions with Mr. Fisher. Since he was starting university while he was still in high school we require a session to ensure they are emotionally as well as mentally prepared. Both reports concluded that not only was he of sound mind, but one of the brighter students we have had the pleasure to join our school. If I remember correctly, the issues he had were feelings of abandonment stemming from his family and his pack.”
Alpha Genesis growled, his Alpha was coming out and I wrinkled my nose. It smelled like dead fish to me. The smell gave me flashes of when he would try to seduce me or when he tried to touch me. Even my wolf seemed to shrink away from the scent.
“That pup is mine!”
“He is your son?” Marcus sounded almost amused.
Alpha Genesis sounded disgusted with the question. “Of course he isn’t!”
“Then he isn’t your pup.”
Another growl resounded. “You’re wrong! I paid…I paid for a medical procedure for him.”
“Did he ask for it?” Marcus was asking.
“Well no. He was…young.”
Marcus scoffed. “Then it sounds like a conversation you need to have with his parents if you’re trying to collect money. Mr. Fisher, of course, didn’t agree to it but his parents did. We also, as shifters, by law can’t buy or sell a life of a pack member. Or even set up an option for indentured servitude. Otherwise, it would put your pack in the spotlight and we would need to send out the Council for illegal activities.”
Alpha Genesis growled. “Of course not. He still needs to follow procedures if he is going to break from the pack. It is my job to make sure he is healthy and covered as his Alpha.”
This time I heard far more of a command, not just anger, in Marcus’ voice. “You are no longer his Alpha. His wellbeing doesn’t fall to you any more. You have no jurisdiction and you’ve just killed six shifters to get to someone you have no authority touching. You need to leave.”
Alpha Genesis laughed manically. “Says who? A pathetic dragon shifter hiding behind glasses who couldn’t even be a real member of a territory?”
I closed my eyes. Alpha Genesis fucked up. It took a few seconds, but I felt the full wave of Marcus’ power wash over the area. I held onto my bag tightly. The scent of burning birchwood filled the air and made me feel like he was here to keep me safe. However, it wasn’t his usual scent. It crackled and had a level of heat and spice to it that wasn’t normally there.
“Al-Alpha Marcus Alford. I didn’t…recognize you.” Oh how the Alpha Genesis voice shook.
A roar from outside resounded and I realized that someone must have called in the cavalry. I was going to be okay. I was going to survive this. I wouldn’t be found out. I wouldn’t die. I’d be okay. Marcus saved me, would save me. He promised and he kept it.
“Alpha Dylan Genesis, you are hereby banned from stepping foot on the campus grounds. Every single one of your pack members will also not be allowed on campus. Any current students will be removed unless they cut ties with your pack. You are to leave now . Your punishment for killing innocents will be decided by the Council and the board of directors.”
Alpha Genesis squeaked a little under the strength of the command. He was only an Alpha-7. Not nearly as strong as his father had been. Marcus was also so far above him that I doubted he could even think about disobeying.
“You can’t…do this…”
“I can and I have. You will be escorted off this property, now. Round up your warriors and leave!” The last word was so loud and commanding that I shivered, almost wanting to comply with the command myself.
There was no other talking as I listened to the group of footsteps head down the stairs. Burying my head in my backpack, I still worried someone was left behind. Someone was lurking in the shadows to grab me. My body was shaking and tears still tumbled out at an alarming rate but I stayed quiet.
It was another five or so minutes before I heard another set of footsteps walking on the broken glass and wood pieces from the doors. I swallowed my fear and curled up even more. Getting caught wasn’t an option.
“Colt…it’s okay. I’m here. You’re safe. They are gone.”
A sob broke out of me as Marcus’ voice filled me with relief. I pushed open the vent and ran into his open arms. He held me tight as I sobbed, my fists grabbing the front of his jacket. I was shaking and I felt my knees start to go. Marcus seemed to already know and he held me up.
"You are so strong, little wolf. You did so good. You made it. You’re safe now. Your Alpha has you now.”
His words and scent washed over me. I nodded and I buried my face in his chest. Suddenly, I felt myself get heavy and my eyes closed as I passed out in his arms.
