Chapter

Twenty-Nine

M arcus pulled into the teacher’s lot and sighed. I tried to hold back my smile. He wasn’t happy that I was on campus. I’d never seen him huff so much and it was all morning. Even snapping at me as I ate breakfast, only to apologize and then huff around some more straightening his house. Honestly, it was cute.

Getting out, I grabbed my backpack and slung it over my shoulder. Warming my hands up, I walked around the car to Marcus. He was frowning still and I shook my head.

“Marcus, you need to stop. I’ll be fine.”

“I know. Just…stay in my office until your class. I need to know you’re safe.”

Motioning him closer, Marcus stepped up to me and leaned his head down. I took his hand in my gloved hands and kissed him. It was still early and there wasn’t really anyone around. He, of course, kissed me back and I could feel his tension start to melt. We broke apart and I smiled, my hands still holding his head.

“Better?”

He nodded slowly. “Yes. Thank you. Still…”

Throwing up hands up, I turned and stomped towards the literature building. He laughed before walking with me. Opening the door for me, I waved to a couple of the people I knew before heading up after Marcus.

A few of the other professors had stopped him at the coffee and snack section. One of which was Professor Davidson. He gave me a nod of acknowledgment before I slipped down the first hall of teacher’s offices. Using my key, I opened up Marcus’ office and shut the door behind me.

Putting up my coat, I pulled a couple water bottles from his cabinets and poured them into the kettle. Starting that, I pulled out some of my notebooks to set up for Professor Davidson’s class. I’d at least be getting a feel for how he was planning on running this quarter’s class.

Marcus came in a few minutes late, sighing and shaking his head. I smiled as I watched him pull his jacket off and check the kettle before pouring us both tea.

“That bad?”

“Yeah.”

I took the mug from him. “Do I need to know?”

He shook his head. “Most of it is teacher stuff. The gossip happening but apparently, my skipping spring has hit the student body.”

“And? What’s the most common rumors? I haven’t checked the student gossip forum yet. Usually Rin is the one that gives me my break down before class.”

“Well, a lot of rumors about Ebony.”

My eyes narrowed and I glared into me tea. “I mean…yeah. I guess that’s understandable.”

“Apparently, the other most common is that I got a student pregnant.”

Coughing, I almost spit out my tea. I burst out laughing and looked over at him. Marcus apparently didn’t find this amusing at all. My eyebrow rose as I looked at him but he huffed and sat down at his desk.

Finally, I asked, “What?”

“I don’t understand why you’re laughing.”

“Because it’s true!”

He turned to me, glaring and it looked like he was going to argue with me. I stared at him, waiting for him to defend himself. As he thought about his argument, I could see the bridge between his eyebrows wrinkle further. Finally, he covered his mouth and I knew he was trying to cover his smile.

“Got anything to say for yourself, Professor Alford ?”

Slowly, Marcus shook his head and turned back to his computer. I let out another couple of laughs before shaking my head and going back to my notebook. He groaned but I just let him wallow in the realization.

We were quiet for a couple of hours as we worked before he finally got up and stretched. Walking over to me, he kissed my head.

“I won’t be done with this class until after you get into yours. Make sure you eat lunch before you go. Otherwise, I will force you to stay in my class instead of my office.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’ll be fine. Thank you. I’ll see you after your class.”

“Come back here. I’ll have some snacks for you.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

He chortled, not the least bit perturbed by my attitude or irritation. “I’ll see you later.”

“Have a good class, Professor .”

Marcus grabbed his jacket, my blue scarf, and briefcase before closing the door behind him. I smiled, a blush splashing across my face. Sabrina would need to give me the spark notes of what people were saying. Just in case I needed to look out for something.

It probably wasn’t keeping it low profile if I was staying in his office all day but there weren’t too many students that came up here. Mostly, it would be the other professors who would talk. Looking at the clock, I would need to leave the office before ten-forty if I was going to grab the bus and be in time for my appointment.

After forty minutes of homework and a little notebook setup, I grabbed my coat and backpack. I’d packed some things in case I needed to run if something bad happened while I was out. Locking up after myself, I put the spare key into my pocket.

Heading out of the literature building, I walked the path to the main gates of the school. There was a bus pickup right across the street and it would be easy to jump on. Once I got to the gate that was pulled open, Miss Ebony stepped out from behind the brick pillar holding the gate.

I froze, glancing back and seeing two other shifters standing a ways down the path from where I just walked. Looking back up at her, I tried to force a smile.

“Good morning, Miss Ebony.”

“I never thought it would be someone like you I would have to complete against.”

My breath hitched as she took a step closer to me. “I…don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, but you do, Colton Fisher. You do. You won’t win though.” Miss Ebony loomed over me, her eyes dark with her animal. “He is mine. He will always be mine. You can’t do shit. Some little Beta? You think you are good enough for him?”

Letting off a warning growl, I don’t know how I managed to keep hold of my wolf but they wanted to throttle this shifter. She didn’t seem to expect me to growl and Miss Ebony stepped back.

“One, he’s not yours. He is no one. Professor Alford chooses who he wants.” I grabbed my backpack and walked past her, stopped next to her for a moment. “Obviously, that’s not you. I’m not competing with you because I don’t have to.”

I continued down the path and out of the school. Mis Ebony growled though, reaching out and grabbing my backpack. She yanked me back and shoved her head next to mine.

“Don’t be so cocky, wolf. Isn’t Alpha Genesis looking for you? I couldn’t imagine what he would say if he found out his favorite little toy was in the hands of a dragon. Maybe I should tell him.”

The threat was too much. Turning, I was about to swipe at her with my claws when someone cleared their throat. Immediately, I pulled my hand back and stepped away from her. My eyes were still bright but I gripped my coat tightly as to not lash out.

“I wouldn’t be witnessing a fight, now would I?” Professor Min, my math professor was eyeing the both of us. “Because that would be bad for the both of you. Especially you, Miss Blackfell, considering you’re already in hot water.”

She huffed and tossed her hair over her shoulder. “I was just having a friendly chat with Mr. Fisher here. Making sure he knows his place.”

Professor Min narrowed his eyes. “Some might misconstrue that as a threat, Miss Blackfell. Be careful.”

“I will. If you will excuse me.”

I watched her go, a frown on my face as she joined the two larger shifters and they walked down the path together. Professor Min stepped forward, patting my shoulder.

“You okay, Fisher?”

Nodding, I took a deep breath and let it out. “Fine, Professor. I’m sorry you had to step in.”

“Not at all. Just making sure everything was okay.”

I squeaked when I heard the bus come around the corner. Waving to Professor Min, I raced across the street just in time to snag the bus. If I didn’t get on this one, I wouldn’t make it to my appointment. Sending a quick text to Mike about what just happened, I shoved my phone in my front pocket.

That was a little too close. Miss Ebony was starting to get on my nerves. All I hoped was that Professor Min kept the little altercation between Miss Ebony and I to himself. If Marcus found out, he’d be more than pissed.

Getting off the bus, I rubbed my hands together. The worst part of the weather was the wind chill. It felt like it blew right through all your layers. I kept my eyes up to look out for any potential threats but the walk to the alley behind the clinic was quiet. Knocking on the door once, I stepped back and waited. Dr. Cardiff opened it a couple minutes later and smiled at me.

“Good morning, Mr. Fisher. Come on in.”

I stepped up and headed to the usual office. “Thank you for seeing me at this time. I have class during most peoples lunch.”

“I’m happy to help. It’s just a matter of adjusting my schedule as long as I know ahead of time. Especially with everything being shut down over the weekend, it got a little busy.”

“I bet.”

She closed the door behind her and I placed my backpack on the chair in the corner. “So, how are you doing?”

“I think I’m doing better. A few things have changed since the last time we met and I’m trying to adjust. I haven’t been throwing up as much the past few days.”

“Well, that’s good to hear! You look better. You look happier and though it would be a stretch to say healthier, you at least are holding yourself higher.” Dr. Cardiff smiled at me. “Let’s get your weight, blood pressure, and we can talk through the next steps.”

Nodding, I took off my coat and jacket. I blinked and she smirked.

“Sweater and shoes as well. Let’s get as close to your actual weight as we can.”

Sighing, I pulled off sweater and slipped my shoes off. Stepping on the scale and watching it tick up was nerve wracking. It settled in on 128 and I felt my heart sink.

“Well, you managed to gain some. So that’s better than losing weight.” Dr. Cardiff was grasping as straws as she wrote in her notebook and I knew it.

“I lost weight last week. It was…a bad week for me. So I probably gained all of it back this past weekend. My appetite has been doubling as well now that I’m not throwing up as much.”

She nodded, not looking up from her notebook. “Getting enough sleep? You said you were averaging around three to four hours before.”

“I’m at about six to eight now.”

The face she made was almost like she was impressed. Motioning to me to the seat, I sat up on it and leaned back. Pulling up my shirt, this time I did see a smile on her face.

“This is so much better, Colton. The weight is going where it needs to now.” She pressed around my belly before measuring across it. “This is much better. How are your pecs feeling?”

I cocked my head to the side. “My pecs?”

She chuckled and pulled my shirt all the way up to my neck. “You’re in month four, Colton. Your body is going to start seriously changing now. Especially with you getting the correct amount of nutrients in your body.”

Her hands were warm and she felt around my chest area and I winced a couple times. “Tender?”

Nodding, I worried for a moment before I saw her smile.

“Good. They are going to start to get larger and develop as they get ready to produce milk. You’ll never be as large as a female gets, considering we already have the fat built up there but you will notice a considerable change as you get closer.”

“Okay. Good to know.”

She pulled up the ultrasound machine and put the usual freezing cold gel on my bump. Immediately, the heartbeat sounded and I smiled. Dr. Raine moved the wand around a few times.

“Since we are at the twenty-two week point, yeah. There is a distinct lack of a little package. So, you are having a little girl.”

Smiling, I nodded. We already knew but it helped to confirm it. Mrs. Truman would have been so happy. The thought felt was painful but I smiled. She would want me happy. This was a time to celebrate, not to be sad.

“She’s very strong and very large. She’s measuring near the top percentage. You said you didn’t know what shifter you were having?”

I sighed. “I…found out.”

Dr. Cardiff raised her eyebrow. “Did you now. Everything okay?”

“Yeah. He was…or is…a dragon.”

Her eyes widened and she looked back up at the screen. She typed in a couple things before she smiled.

“Well, knowing that, she is right on track as a hatchling. Still on the larger side but that would be on par for her being an Alpha.” Dr. Cardiff chuckled before she looked over at me. “I think you understand what that means. That you will be larger than most wolves are.”

Nodding slowly, I had started to come to grips with it considering how fast I felt like I was showing. “I made arrangements to not be taking anymore in person classes after December.”

“Good. I’m glad. Especially if you are going to still try to hide. You’ll need to be more careful moving forward. In the next couple weeks you may be able to pick up her heartbeat as well. Everything looks really good though, Colton. I’ll print out the pictures for you.”

She wiped me off and helped me sit up on the bed. Her face was tight though as she sat back on her stool, tapping the clipboard. I braced myself for what she was about to tell me.

“I’m going to provide you with some information moving forward at what to expect. Body changes, emotional changes, pheromone changes, all that. But you needed another seven pounds on top of what you gained for me to feel safe to continue. You trending in the right direction is a good sign but you’re still in that high risk area. At the six months is when I have to start documenting high risk cases. I’m sorry, Colton. This is the last time I can see you.”

I couldn’t help the tears. It wasn’t like I didn’t know it was coming. My weight wasn’t nearly what it needed to be and I’d lost a lot of weight from not eating for nearly a week. Still, it was hard to come to grips with. Dr. Cardiff came forward with a box of tissues as she rubbed my leg.

“I’m sorry, Colton.”

Shaking my head, I sniffled. “No, no. I promise. I understand completely…this is just…”

“Hormones?”

Chuckling, I nodded. “Can I ask a few questions? Get some information to tide me over before I can find someone else to help.”

“Of course. We are alone for another forty minutes. Pick my brain with anything and I’ll try to fill in the time as well.”
