Page 93 of His True Mate
I nodded sadly and sniffed again.
“And don’t say it’s because he doesn’t want you, we all know he does,” Ruby insisted.
I sighed. “He walked into the bedroom and saw my stuff.”
James looked at Austin and then nodded towards the bedroom door.
A few minutes later he returned scowling.
“Looks like we’ve got a runner.”
They all looked at me and I wished I could just melt into the floor in a puddle of goo or something,
“You’re leaving?” Ruby asked.
“No. Or yes. I don’t really know anymore.”
“But Clay thinks you’re leaving?”
I shrugged. “I was just so hurt, and I wanted to get away from the pain. I thought it was what he wanted.”
“Oh girl, that’s the last thing he wants.”
“What’s she talking about?” Thomas demanded.
“Clay hasn’t claimed Winnie because he heard her only commit to a thirty-day trial at the stables. He’s worried she’s not going to be happy here long term because she’s used to a more exotic life on the road.”
“That’s what he told you?”
“Yes, and he wasn’t rejecting you last night. I tried to explain that already. He just wouldn’t mark you as his while you were so drunk.”
“Drunk? Jesus, did my mate have anything to do with this?” Thomas asked.
Ruby and I both just stared at him.
“Answer me,” he said in a deathly calm voice.
I felt the tingling sensation of Alpha power surround me. I gasped, instantly averting my eyes to stare at the floor. My knees were buckling until the pressure, and I was seconds away from submitting and giving my full allegiance to him.
“Okay, okay, she might have had a little something to do with it. But it wasn’t just her.”
“Who else?” Thomas insisted without lifting his powers.
“Peyton, Sydney, Kate, Clara, and maybe even me.”
“Maybe?” I asked.
“Fine, me too.”
He rescinded his Alpha powers, and I took a deep breath, still a little shaky.
Thomas ran a hand through his hair.
“What did you do this time?”
Ruby cringed. “We may have encouraged her take the bull by the horns and go after what she wanted. Not to be afraid to tell him she wasn’t leaving and needed to be a marked woman.”
“Let me guess. There was wine involved.”
