Page 56 of His True Mate
I forced myself to settle a little and slowly backed away from the pissed off animal. Since he was staying on the other side of the corral now, when I got close Austin opened the gate and sniggered at me.
“Dammit Clay! I was making progress with him and you just set me back days if not weeks. What were you thinking?”
I growled in response.
Her eyes widened and her hands sat firmly on her hips as she glared down at me.
“I know you did not just growl at me,” she scowled, and my wolf cowered at her feet. “Don’t you try and play nice now. I am not happy with you, wolf or man.”
Emmett started to laugh.
“You look like a damn puppy caught doing something he shouldn’t. What the freaking hell, Clay?”
Austin just had to chime in.
“He’s whipped already. We know who wears the pants in this relationship.”
I snapped at the both of them, but it only made them howl in laughter.
Brady frowned and shook his head.
“You guys shouldn’t provoke him. Clearly, he’s not stable right now. All he saw was his mate in trouble. You both would have done the same if it were you.”
“Not me,” Emmett insisted. “I will never be that whipped. Not ever.”
“And if I ever act this stupid over a woman, you are all free to heckle the shit out of me,” Austin said.
I could still sense Winnie’s frustration with me, so I laid down at her feet and rolled over on my back. This only spurred Emmett and Austin on and I knew I wouldn’t live this down anytime soon. My focus wasn’t on them though. All I cared about was calming my mate down.”
I whimpered and nipped at her heels. I wasn’t ready to face her wrath in my skin. I hoped I could calm her down some first. I knew I’d screwed up. I just struggled to think straight anytime I thought she was in trouble, or another male was sniffing around in her direction. I just couldn’t help it. She was mine!
“Cut it out, Clay,” she said but with a little less malice this time.
I nodded my head towards the fields.
“I think he wants you to shift and go for a run with him,” Brady said.
“Out there?” she asked in wonder.
I nodded.
“Okay.”
She followed me to the gate, opened it. I nudged her gently to go first. It was a sign of respect. The fact that I could see everything beyond the gate and knew there were no threats in the area allowed me to give her that.
I followed her and barked for her to change.
“Demanding little shit, isn’t he?” Emmett teased.
“Go ahead and strip so you can shift and join him,” Austin encouraged.
I growled and barked for them to go away.
Austin held up his hands and backed away laughing.
He knew exactly what he was doing and was provoking me on purpose. That asshole.
“I don’t think we’re wanted here, Emmett.”
