Page 76 of His True Mate
He growled as he pulled back to glare at her.
My cheeks burned in mortification.
I patted his chest and turned to face Lily, even though what I really wanted to do was melt into the floor in a puddle of embarrassment.
Lily smirked back at the two of us.
Clay’s hands were still on my hips.
I took a deep breath and smiled.
“Hi Lily.”
“I’d ask if you’d rather stay home tonight, but we all know you would, so say goodbye and get your ass in the car.”
I dared to turn back to Clay who kissed me until my toes curled.
I was breathless and hot all over as he escorted me to the car and opened the door for me. As I settled into Lily’s passenger seat, he looked down at me from over the top of the doorframe.
“Have a great time,” he said giving me a wink.
All I could do was nod.
As soon as he shut the door, Lily pulled away from the house.
“All I can say is damn. Clay was always cute. They all are, but damn. The way he acts around you is hotter than hot. I think he even made my toes curl with that goodbye kiss. I wouldn’t blame you one bit if you ditched me to stay home with all that.”
My jaw dropped and my cheeks were on fire as I covered my face with my hands.
“Girl, do not be embarrassed. That is the sort of thing jealousy is made of. I know there a few women in the Pack very disappointed to see that man off the market. Clay’s stable, good, and certainly not hard on the eyes. I don’t think any of us realized the fire inside him, but dang girl, you have certainly stoked it.”
“Lily!”
“Sorry. I’m not real good about keeping my thoughts to myself. I just mean, it’s really great to see how happy you make him.”
“He makes me happy too,” I confessed.
She beamed back at me. “Right answer.”
I frowned. “Am I being tested tonight?”
“Of course.”
“What?”
She threw her head back and laughed.
“Winnie, you’re brand new to the Pack. We don’t know anything about you yet, but we’re going to find out. You just happened to stumble right into my inner circle. Clay is family and we protect our family, but don’t worry. I like you. I think you’re exactly what that boy needed all along.”
“We’re true mates. Aren’t true mates always exactly what the other needs?”
“You know, my mother always says, ‘God doesn’t make mistakes when matching true mates.’ She hasn’t been wrong so far, even when one thinks she just might be.”
“Do you mean like when you met Thomas?” I challenged and then immediately regretted it.
But Lily just laughed. “Exactly!”
She pulled up to a large home with a big front porch. It was gorgeous, the kind of place you’d see in a movie or something.
