Page 90 of His True Mate
His chest was rising and falling heavily as he crept inside and checked each room.
“What are you doing?” I yelled.
He gave me a hazy look and I could see his wolf was just under the surface.
“Mine,” he said, half out of his mind as he crushed me to his chest.
I cursed the flutter of hope in my heart.
“You’re squishing me,” I protested.
His body was shaking all over as his hands started roaming down mine. It wasn’t in a sexual way though.
“Are you okay?” he asked in a gruff voice.
“Yeah. I’m fine. Why are you freaking out?”
He took a deep breath trying to calm himself down.
“You didn’t answer the phone and then I heard you talking to someone when I pulled up.”
I took a step back when his grip on me loosened and crossed my arms over my chest.
“I was talking to my parents.”
“Oh. I’m sorry. I was just imagining the worst.”
I wanted to ask him why he even cared, but I couldn’t seem to formulate the words.
“I’m sorry,” he repeated and then walked away, right into the bedroom.
Almost immediately I heard a fierce growl. I cringed knowing he saw my bag overflowing with all my things I’d tried to cram into it.
He stomped out to face me with wild eyes once more.
“You’re leaving?”
My lips pursed.
He shook his head, and I could see fur starting to sprout up his arms.
“I knew it,” he said shaking his head.
His look of disappointment almost took me to my knees. It was a far worse pain than even that drunken feeling of rejection. I was paralyzed. I didn’t know what to say to him.
He shook his head, shifted into his wolf, and ran out the broken front door.
I crumbled to the floor sobbing.
Off in the distance I heard Clay’s wolf howl in anguish.
I’d done that to him.
I had no idea how much time had passed, but he didn’t return by the time the sun was setting. Still, I sat there waiting and crying.
A car pulled up, stopped. I heard the door shut and footsteps approach, but I knew it wasn’t my mate. If I just sat there, maybe they’d go away.
I hadn’t remembered the broken front door until I heard Ruby’s shocked voice.
