Page 78 of His & Hers
“He has three wounds, all on the right side. I’ve managed to stitch them, so if he rests properly,” he raised an eyebrow at me then, “he will recover easily within ten days. I’ve given him antibiotics to avoid the chance of any infections, but if he gets a fever at all, call me immediately.”
“Bed rest?” I checked as he nodded.
“I will change the bandages regularly, and I will come every day to see him.”
“Thank you. Hewillrest, I assure you.”
The doctor hesitated before picking up his bag.
“What is it?” I asked as he looked back at the bed.
“He’s fortunate to have you if you don’t mind me saying. Not many girls your age care in the way you do.”
His voice was low and tinged with sadness.
“Daughter?” I asked, tilting my head slightly.
“Indeed. I must go; if you need anything, call me.”
I nodded, wondering what the poor doctor was going through at home.
I padded over to the bed, pulling up a chair. I took Lucas’s hand in mine, lifting it to my lips as I closed my eyes.
“If you die, I’ll kill you,” I mumbled, tears finally pricking my eyes.
“How do you figure that out?” Lucas croaked, his green eyes twinkling as he gazed at me through his stupidly thick lashes.
My heart raced as I squeezed his hand, closing my eyes with sheer relief when he sighed.
“Are you ok?” I asked as he blinked slowly.
“I’ve been stabbed and heard you threaten to kill me if I dare die. I’ve been better.” Lucas chuckled, grimacing as he did.
“You’ve got to rest. For ten days.”
“Like fuck—”
“Lucas,” I barked suddenly, making his eyes widen in disbelief. “You’re fucking resting. Then you can do what you want.”
“Can I?” Lucas smirked, stroking my face as my anger dissolved.
“Yes, you can.”
“Can I marry you?” Lucas whispered, his eyes finally meeting mine.
The air whooshed out of my body as I laughed.
“That’s the morphine talking,” I scoffed as he rolled his eyes.
“Just fucking answer me.”
“You can do whatever you like, including marrying me, if you buy a big enough diamond.”
“There’s plenty in the safe; go and pick whichever you want,” he winked, a broad smile on his face.
“Nope. You need to make an effort, Deacon.”
“Yes, Ma’am. Can you send Richie in here?”
