Page 100 of His & Hers
"Al? What's wrong?"
I was concerned, her eyes distant as she sighed.
"I don't know. Shouldn't I be elated? I'm marrying the guy tomorrow, and all I want to do is run away. Being with him is a lot harder than I imagined."
I frowned as she continued.
"His phone is constantly ringing. He leaves at all hours with no explanation. If I question him, he snaps at me. Everywhere I go, Phil has to come with me because I'm potentially a target. I don't know, Zane. I don't feel very free."
I was horrified she felt this way. This wasn't news to me- or anyone that knew Lucas. He had set out these expectations when they got back together, and I thought she was aware of it.
"You don't have to marry him, Alice."
She laughed hollowly before turning to me sadly.
"Yeah, I do. Otherwise, he will kill me."
My mouth fell open as I gripped her shoulders, my eyes staring into hers.
"Alice, he would never kill you; he loves you."
She smiled then before leaning forward to touch the fabric of her wedding gown.
"He does. I know. Probably just wedding nerves, right?"
"Alice, don't marry him if you feel like that, please. Especially with the baby—”
Alice looked at me sharply then.
"Don't tell anyone. Please."
I nodded as she leaned into me, my arms circling her as I sighed. Was this just Alice being dramatic? Surely he wouldn't lay a finger on her; he loved her so much...
"I do love him, Zane, and you know—”
"You can't help who you fall in love with." We chimed as I kissed her forehead.
