Page 27 of His & Hers
I couldn’t answer, purely because I couldn’tbreathe.
“I need the bathroom.” I managed to gasp as he suddenly held my hand in his, inspecting the ring on my finger.
Oh, God...

She was lying.
Her body was shaking slightly as I reached forward to hold her left hand, examining the ring. It was beautiful, a large diamond surrounded by tiny emeralds on a plain gold band. I felt something I’d not felt before.
Jealousy.
I wanted to rip it off her finger and toss it out the window, but it wasn’t my style.
“It’s exquisite,” I murmured as I twisted it, allowing the light to shimmer on it.
Her lips parted slightly as her breathing became heavier, her eyes fixed on me.
“Thank you.”
“Are you happy?” I found myself asking as I turned my attention away from the ring. Her hand was still in mine as she nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Okay then,” I murmured, releasing her hand from mine as she spoke suddenly.
“Are you?”
“I thought so until you walked in,” I answered honestly as Alice bounded through the door.
She didn’t even look at us as she left through the front door, letting it slam behind her.
“Oh dear,” I sighed as I looked back at her apologetically. “Excuse me.”
I kissed her hand and she flinched, pulling her hand away as though she had been burnt. I frowned but decided to leave it; I needed to make sure Alice was okay. I strode to the front door, only to see her disappearing into a sleek white Mercedes. I sighed as she saw me, blowing me a kiss as though that would reassure me. The door opened behind me, and I heard my dad sigh.
“Out of all of you, Alice is the hardest,” Dad stated as he scanned the empty road.
“She’s okay, Dad. She’s just headstrong.”
“Did you see where she went?” he asked, lifting an eyebrow at me.
“Yeah. Some white Mercedes.”
Cal rolled his eyes as he groaned.
“Of course. No clapped-out Fiat for your sister.”
We chuckled as we walked back in, stopping when we saw Layla leave the restroom. Her cheeks flushed when she saw me, making her turn and walk away quickly.
“What happened?” Dad asked with intrigue and I couldn’t help but smile.
“Nothing happened. She’s engaged.”
His eyes danced with mischief as he studied me.
