By the time we reached the destination, the sun was setting. We parked our bikes a few miles down the dirt path. We didn’t need to alert Jamie that we were close.

“Okay, fellas, Cara and Sara have flown the drones ahead to see what we’re facing,” Viper said as we made our way through the woods.

“Damn that, Viper. That crazy bitch has my woman. I am not waiting,” I hissed.

“Capone, you’re thinking irrationally right now. You don’t know if Jamie is alone or not. Or if Giovanna is directly in the line of fire. You’re letting your personal feelings cloud years of experience.”

I sighed in frustration, knowing he was right.

“Okay, fellas, it looks like Jamie is locked inside a barn with Giovanna. There’s only one way in and one way out. But you aren’t going to be able to just rush the barn house and outnumber her.” Cara’s voice came through my earpiece.

“Why?” I asked. From the tone of her voice, I could tell there was something she wasn’t saying.

“ Because Sara just accessed a police report filed by Jayda and their mother. According to this statement, they filed a mental health crisis report on Jamie. She suffers from a cluster of issues. Two of them being attachment and personality disorder. Now, they never name you specifically Capone, but Jayda does say that she stopped taking her meds a little over a month ago when the guy she was seeing stopped taking her calls.”

Curses go off around the group because this just got trickier.

It was one thing to call her crazy, but if Jamie really had been off her meds for over a month, then she was certainly a loose cannon.

If we approached her as a group, she would more than likely feel trapped, and that was the worst thing you could do to someone who was on the verge of a mental break.

“I know what I have to do,” I told Viper.

“What?” he asked.

“Let me go in there alone. No guns. No brothers.”

“Hell no! Capone, she could kill you and Giovanna.”

“It won’t come to that. Just listen to my plan.”

After I ran everything down to the brothers, some were still uncertain, but ultimately, this was my woman and my decision.

As I approached the barn, I could hear Jamie’s raised voice.

“He was mine! And you took him!”

A smack was followed by a cry, prompting me to move faster. The sound of the barn door opening made Jamie jump behind Giovanna, who was tied to a chair with tears streaming down her face. There was a sizable handprint on her face.

I tried to push down the anger settling in my chest. I wanted to wring Jamie’s neck. I didn’t care what her condition was. In my eyes, if her family knew she was off her meds, they should have had her committed before she took things this far. I wasn’t about to handle her with kiddie gloves.

Jamie raised a gun to Giovanna’s head, staring at me with wide eyes. “W-what are you doing here? How did you find us?”

“Jamie, put the gun down. You don’t want to do this.”

She shook her vehemently as tears sprang to her eyes. “I have to!” she cried as her hand shook.

Giovanna silently wept, eyes full of fear.

“No. You don’t,” I reassured Jamie as I took a cautious step forward. “We can talk about this. You don’t need to hurt her, Jamie.”

A scowl formed on her face. “Why are you worried about her?!” she roared, making Giovanna jump. “What about me?! I love you, and all you’re worried about is her. That’s exactly why I have to do this. You’ll never be mine because of her!”

Jamie looked down at Giovanna, pressing the gun firmly into her temple.

Shit.

“It’s not because of her, Jamie. It’s because I don’t love you.”

“What?” Her head snapped up. I saw the waver in her emotions, and I knew my plan was going to work.

“I will never be yours because I don’t want to be, Jamie.”

She shook her head in disbelief. “N-no that’s not t-t-true.”

“It is. Jamie, we’ve known each other for years. I never made you my woman because I didn’t want that with you.”

“Don’t say that!”

“It’s true. You’re blaming Giovanna because it’s easier to do that than face the truth.”

“Stop it!” she screamed as she dropped her hand that held the gun.

“I can't stop until you understand that I don’t want to be with you.”

“YOU’RE LYING!”

Jamie was becoming unhinged by the second. “No. I’m not. I need you to understand that even if it wasn’t Giovanna, it will never be you.”

“I SAID STOP IT!” she snapped and raised the gun, letting off two shots.

Everything was a blur of motion. One moment, I was on my feet, and the next, I was on the ground. My shoulder felt like it was on fire. I heard a few more shots followed by Giovanna’s screams.

“Hold on, Capone. We got you,” Doc said as he checked out my shoulder.

“Giovanna?” I rasped with a clenched jaw.

“I’m here, honey.” Giovanna kneeled on the other side of me. I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing she was unharmed.

“Looks like one of the bullets went through and through, but one is stuck in there,” Doc said.

“Take it out,” I told him. This shit hurt like hell. I could very well ride back to the clubhouse and wait until Doc gave me some medicine to remove the bullet, but I also knew the longer it stayed, the more heightened the long-lasting effects.

“You sure?”

I nodded, and Doc grabbed his medical bag. I turned away, not wanting to watch him dig into my shoulder.

Giovanna palmed my cheeks, bringing her forehead to mine. “Focus on me, okay?” she whispered, tears pouring from her eyes.

I tried my best not to react, but when I felt Doc dig into my flesh, I groaned like a wounded animal. I felt hands come down on my arm, holding me still as I tried fighting against the pain. It felt like Doc was digging around for minutes before I felt the relief of the bullet being removed.

“There we go. Let’s get you out of here so I can patch you up,” Doc said.

Doc and Giovanna helped me up from the ground. It was then that I was finally able to see Jamie sprawled out on the ground. Her eyes were wide open, but they had no life in them. I shook my head, hating that it had to come to this.

“You okay?” I asked Giovanna.

She scoffed and choked out a giggle. “You’re standing here with two bullet wounds and you’re asking me if I’m okay?”

I shrugged my good shoulder. “Yeah.”

Rising on her toes, she pecked my lips. “Yes, you crazy man. I’m just fine as long as I have you by my side.”

I gave her a few kisses of my own. “Well, it’s a good thing I don’t plan on going anywhere.”

Giovanna smiled as we made our way out of the barn. I had my woman, and that was all that mattered. Everything was going to be just fine from here on out.
