Chapter One
CAPONE
M y ringing cell phone stirs me from the deep slumber I was in. My flight got delayed twice, and I didn’t make it back home until three in the morning. Needless to say, I was out like a light the second my head hit the pillow.
With my head buried under my pillow, I blindly searched for my phone. Once I had it in my hand, I slid it under the pillow and to my ear.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Good morning, Mr. Ferrari. Cara wanted me to inform you that today is a suit day. You have meetings lined up until the evening with seven clients.”
I groaned in annoyance, causing Cara’s assistant, Sage, to giggle. I never thought in a million years that Cara, my prez’s wife and Ol’ Lady, would become my boss. But two months ago, she came to Dice, Gunner, and me with a proposal we couldn’t refuse.
“Will you stop fidgeting?” I hissed at Dice as we made our way to Viper’s house.
“I can't help it,” he whined. “I feel like I’m being summoned to my death.”
Gunner snickered, shaking his head at his dramatics. I can't lie and say I’m not a little nervous that Prez requested the three of us to come over as soon as breakfast was over. It wasn’t like we hadn’t stepped foot in his home before, but it was unlike Viper to call us over.
His family home was sacred. It was his place of peace away from the chaos of the club. Whatever it was, I hoped it wasn’t anything bad.
As we approached the porch, the door swung open. Viper stood there with a blank expression, holding the door open. He motioned for us to come inside. Once we made it into the living room, Dice froze like a statue with his eyes wide.
“I knew it! You’re going to kill us, aren’t you?” he cried out when he saw Bear sitting next to Sara. Cara was also seated on the couch with them.
Cara snorted, rolling her eyes. She motioned with her hand to the couch that was across from them. “Dice, I swear you are the most dramatic biker I know. Kill you? In the home I raise my babies in?”
Dice visibly relaxed as we took our seats. Viper sat next to Cara and threw an arm around her shoulders. His face was still void of emotion, and so was Bear’s.
“What’s this all about?” I asked, getting right to it.
“Sara and I have been working on expanding Romano’s Security for a while now. Instead of just selling the devices we create, we’re now adding security services.”
Dice and Gunner’s faces matched my shocked expression. Romano’s Security made a killing with the devices the girls made alone. They created anything from home security cameras, bug devices, nanny cams, drones, recording devices and the list goes on. I wondered what made them decide to do this.
“Congratulations. But I have to ask, what does that have to do with the three of us?” Gunner inquired.
“We want to hire you,” Sara said, sitting forward. “You three have just the experience we’re looking for in our guards. We know for sure you have the training. You all have military backgrounds. It really was a no-brainer.”
“And you two are okay with this?” Dice asked Bear and Viper.
“I am. The opportunity the girls are giving you is too good for me to try and kill it,” Viper reassured him. Bear nodded in agreement.
“But what about the gym? We run it.”
“And if you accept the girls’ job offer, you will have a month to train three brothers to take over.”
“Cara, how are you going to do this? You just found out you’re pregnant again,” Dice said.
“Sara and I will rarely ever be out on jobs with you all. We’re focused mainly on the business side of things. We look at what our father has done for himself, and we want the same. We want to build an empire.”
An empire indeed. Paul, their father, was the true definition of a boss.
He went from working warehouse jobs to provide for his family to investing in stocks.
Once he earned a check big enough, he opened his very first hotel, Romano’s Palace.
The rest was history. The man was a billionaire and still worked his ass off expanding his hotels.
Dice, Gunner, and I sat in silence, looking between each other. I was trying to gauge how they felt about this. I didn’t want to give myself away, but I was intrigued. I’d been wanting to switch some things up in my life, and this seemed to be just what I needed.
“What all would we be doing?” Gunner asked, looking between the girls.
“We want the three of you to be head of security. You will each have your own team of guards that you are in charge of. You would need to make sure they are fulfilling the duties of their assignments. There will be some traveling involved whenever there are big events such as charity events, private parties, etc. You would also need to ensure they take a physical assessment every three months. I want my guards to be in tip-top shape at all times.” Cara pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket and slid it across the table.
“This would be your yearly pay not including bonuses throughout the year.”
When my eyes landed on the piece of paper, my eyes bulged. Dice leaped from his seat in a rush. “Consider me head of motherfuckin’ security!” he declared.
Viper and Bear chuckled as the girls giggled at his antics. “Gunner? Capone? What about you? Are you in?” Sara looked at us with hopeful eyes.
Grinning, Gunner and I answered in unison, “We’re in.”
A month after that conversation, we had trained Axel, Storm, and Armor on how to run the gym.
By the time our first day at Romano’s Security came, I was stoked.
Cara and Sara had invested heavily in their business.
I didn’t even want to know how much it cost them.
They had relocated to a bigger building.
The first floor was the tech shop. The second floor was where we held meetings with potential clients.
All of our offices were also on the second floor.
When the girls presented me with my very own office with an en suite bathroom with a shower, I was thoroughly impressed.
Finally, on the third floor, there was a gym we used for training and physical assessments.
Dice, Gunner, and I were all in charge of thirty guards each. I thought the girls went overboard with the hiring until I saw the spreadsheet with jobs that were already lined up. We knew the girls had made a name for themselves in the business, but we didn’t know it was to this degree.
The only thing I would complain about was having to wear these damn suits when we had potential clients coming through. The girls didn’t make us dress up every day, but when we had meetings, they requested we come dressed professionally. I understood it, but dammit, I didn’t like it.
“Sage, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Capone?” I asked as I sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
“Sorry, Mr. Capone. I’ll try to remember that going forward.”
I didn’t address her calling me mister because it was pointless.
Sage was eighteen years old and, surprisingly, she was the utmost professional.
She was the daughter of one of Cara and Sara’s employees from the diner they ran.
Well, used to run. They handed the reins over to their longtime manager, Maria, since their hands were full with Romano’s Security.
“Thanks, Sage. Tell Cara I’ll be in the office within the hour.”
“Will do,” she said as she ended the call.
I got up from my bed and made my way to my bathroom. Sometimes I had to remember where I was when I opened my eyes. Dice, Gunner, and I decided to purchase homes now that we had a more demanding job. We didn’t want to live on the compound like some of the brothers.
We ended up finding a gated community that was only ten minutes from the clubhouse and twenty minutes from Romano’s Security.
They had four homes available. We snagged three of them, and they just so happened to be right by each other.
Dice lived next door to me, and Gunner lived across the street from us.
By the time I was dressed and ready for work, I had just enough time to make a quick breakfast before I had to leave. Just as I was finishing up, I heard a horn honking outside my home. Gunner was out front summoning Dice and me. We sometimes carpooled to work.
After locking up my home, I made my way to Gunner's truck and got in the passenger seat. We chuckled as we watched Dice stomp across his yard before getting into the truck. He hated wearing a suit more than I did.
“Those girls knew what they were doing. Flashing those big-ass numbers of a salary but waited until after we accepted to inform us we have to dress in these goddamn monkey suits at least once a week,” he fussed as soon as he was in the truck.
Gunner and I chuckled as he backed out of the driveway. Things had definitely changed for me, but I would much rather live the life I created for myself than the one that was expected of me.
