Chapter Seventeen
GIOVANNA
T oday, my stomach was a ball of nerves.
It was the day of Asha’s interrogation. When Capone came home from work the other day and told me Cara had gotten permission for me to tag along, I didn’t have to think about it.
I still stood firm on the fact that I wanted to see this entire thing through.
Just because I had Gabi back, that didn’t mean it was over.
I wanted Asha to pay for the things she had done.
Regardless of Derek not being the best husband or father, he didn’t deserve to die.
Once the flight landed, we were pressed for time. The flight had been delayed twice due to weather conditions. I had just enough time to drop Gabi off with my mom before we made our way to STF headquarters.
My mom flew in specifically to watch Gabi while I watched the interrogation. Gabi was so excited to see my mom waiting for her on the porch. As soon as her feet hit the ground, she shot off like a rocket. Despite my mother living in another state, she held a large presence in my daughter’s life.
I didn’t have time to introduce Capone to my mother, but I knew we could do that once we came back. She tried getting a glimpse of Capone, but like I said, we were pressed for time. I promised to let her meet him when we returned.
I wasn’t the least bit surprised that Viper and Bear tagged along for the trip. I’d spent enough time at the clubhouse to know all the guys with Ol’ Ladies were extremely protective. I knew there was no way those two would let Cara and Sara travel to another state without them.
As we pulled through the gates at the headquarters, Capone reached over and grabbed my hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
This man had become a true support system for me.
He was everything I didn’t know I needed.
Sometimes, I felt like only he had the power to relax and soothe me the way he did.
There was just something about his presence alone. It was so dominating. When he was around, I didn’t think twice about submitting and allowing him to lead.
When the van came to a stop, we all began to exit the vehicle.
We made our way inside and we were quickly escorted to the elevators by a secretary.
Once I heard the ding, alerting us the ride was over, I took a deep breath.
I knew that in just a few minutes, I would be sitting in a room, watching Cara and Sara question Derek’s mistress.
As soon as Cara and Sara stepped foot off the elevator, the room was filled with cheers from the agents.
They quickly swarmed them with handshakes and hugs.
You could tell they were missed around here.
Mercury approached the large crowd with a proud smile as he made his way through the sea of people.
“Alright, everyone, I know you all are probably glad to have them back, even if it's just for a day, but they're here to do a job. Let's get back to work.”
The crowd dispersed and Mercury began to lead us through the halls. He ushered us into a dark room with a one-way mirror. Asha was on the other side, sitting at a table with whom I assumed was her lawyer.
“So, what’s going to be your approach when you get in there?” Mercury asked Cara and Sara.
“We plan on getting a rise out of her to the point where she snaps and confesses. Asha somehow feels slighted after Derek left her, so while I’ll be reminding her of her heartbreak and how she didn’t matter, Sara will pretend to sympathize with her,” Cara said as she clipped the badge Mercury gave her onto her suit jacket.
“So, you’re basically going to go with the classic good cop, bad cop?”
“It’s a classic for a reason.” Sara shrugged and clipped her badge on as well.
They gave their men a kiss before grabbing the files off the table and leaving the room.
Fifteen seconds later, Cara and Sara walked through the door.
I saw Asha tense as Cara and Sara took a seat at the table.
After a quick introduction, Cara jumped right into it.
“Ms. Davis, can you tell me the extent of your relationship with Derek?”
Asha sat forward, clearing her throat. “We were together for four years.”
“Together? Don’t you think that’s a stretch? I mean, he was married.”
Asha shifted uncomfortably in her seat, staring daggers at Cara. “He was only married out of obligation. If she hadn’t gotten pregnant, Derek would have never married her. It was me he loved.”
I gritted my teeth as I thought back to when I had read a similar message in Derek’s phone minus the part about him loving her.
He definitely told Danny that he felt he had to do the right thing when I had gotten pregnant.
Derek claimed he loved me. He just wasn’t in love with me.
He thought he could eventually get there but with time, we kind of drifted apart instead.
Cara pulled a sheet of paper from her file and scanned it with a raised brow. “But didn’t he leave you after you lost your baby?”
“Are you going to ask my client a question about the actual reason we’re here, Detective, or just continue to rehash her past relationships?” Asha’s lawyer intervened.
“Relationships? I’ve only asked about one. Were there more married men?” Cara held a tiny smirk as Asha balled her fist up.
“I am not a home-wrecker. We were in love!”
“Were you?” Cara asked in a disbelieving tone.
“Cara, stop. It’s not her fault Derek led her on,” Sara interjected.
It seemed Sara’s comment pissed Asha off more than the things Cara was saying. I guess she didn’t take too well to being pitied.
“Led me on? You have no clue what the hell you’re talking about. He got me pregnant on purpose. He wanted a family with me! Had I not miscarried, he would still be here. We would have been a family. Me, him, Gabi, and our baby.”
“What do you mean had you not miscarried he would still be here?” Cara stared at her intently, causing Asha eyes to buck at the slip.
She didn’t even realize she had just told on herself.
It wasn’t solid enough to prove her guilt, but I was now certain Cara and Sara would get that confession.
Asha was already cracking under pressure.
Her miscarriage was ultimately the demise of her and Derek’s relationship.
He left her and she killed him for it. Now we just needed her to admit it.
“I think what my client means—” Asha lawyer tried to speak up, but Cara cut him off.
“I don’t need you to think for your client, Counselor. I need her to answer my question.”
“I j-just mean he would have never left me,” Asha said nervously. She began to fidget with her fingers, looking from her lawyer to Cara.
“Okay. How about you tell us where you were the night Derek was murdered?” Sara questioned.
“I was with a good friend of mine. He was recently killed during a home invasion.”
“How convenient.” Cara took a sip of her water, ignoring the venomous stare from Asha. “Tell me something, Ms. Davis. You say you and Derek were in love, correct?”
“Yes,” Asha stated matter-of-factly.
“Then how come you didn’t attend his funeral?”
“His family wouldn’t allow it. They wanted to respect his wishes and keep our relationship away from her .”
“You mean his wife?” Sara asked innocently.
I snickered because I knew she was taking a small jab at Asha. She was supposed to be the comforting one, but with a question like that, it would do more harm than good.
Asha stared at Sara like she wanted to pounce. “Yes,” she gritted through clenched teeth.
“I know that had to sting. Even in death, you still came second to his wife.” Cara held eye contact with Asha while sipping her water. She was cool as a cucumber. Meanwhile, Asha looked ready to burst at the seams.
“Second?!” she snarled.
Her lawyer tried whispering in her ear, but she moved away. I could tell he was getting frustrated because he knew Cara had struck a nerve. At any given moment, Asha could snap and say something that would seal her fate.
“What else would you call it? He left you after suffering something so devastating and moved on with his life.” Cara tilted her head to the side.
“He wasn’t thinking clearly when he called things off. The loss of our child had him thinking irrationally. He only loved me! His wife was just a placeholder. If it wasn’t for Gabi, she would have never held a spot in his life.”
Listening to this woman made my brain short-circuit. She had so much animosity for me, like I had done something to her. She actually believed that a man who was cheating on his wife loved her. The way she was going on about it, you would believe that it was I who slept with her husband.
“Then why did he ask her to have another baby?”
Cara’s question caused my eyes to balloon. Derek had never asked me to have another baby. Why would she tell a blatant lie like that? Capone chuckled next to me, shaking his head. “That woman is a fuckin genius.”
Before I could ask him to explain what he meant, Asha’s raised voice caught my attention.
“You’re lying!” Asha screamed. Her lawyer was desperately trying to reel her in, but it was clear. This was the final straw. Asha had finally snapped.
“Actually, I’m not.” Cara searched through the file and retrieved a piece of paper, sliding it over to Asha.
Her lawyer tried grabbing the paper before Asha, but she quickly snatched it away. “Don’t read that, Asha,” he told her.
Asha ignored his warning, turning her body away from him when he tried taking it from her. “How could he try and give her another baby after I lost mine?” Asha asked as a torrent of tears rolled down her face.
“She was his wife,” Sara said, as if she was trying to reason with Asha.
“STOP SAYING THAT!” she screeched, slamming her fist down on the table.
“You want us to stop stating the obvious? She was indeed his wife. The only woman he truly loved.” Cara’s voice was calm, but her words were like venom.
“T-that’s not true.” Asha shook her head furiously. Her pain was evident.
