Chapter Nine
GIOVANNA
W e finally made it back to the clubhouse. Paul’s pilot called early the next morning to let us know we were in the clear for takeoff. As soon as we stepped into the clubhouse, Cara and Sara were waiting for us.
I tried to follow them into the cave, but they stopped me. When I tried to protest, they weren’t hearing it.
“This case is taking a toll on you mentally and physically, Giovanna. It's hard enough to function knowing your daughter is missing, but with every piece of information we discover, you fall deeper and deeper into a hole. Take some time and try and relax. When we get Gabi back, she’s going need you to be healthy. As soon as we find something, I promise to tell you immediately.” Cara patted my shoulder before walking away with Sara right behind her.
I couldn’t deny her words. I’d had so many mental breakdowns since I’d been here. Between worrying about Gabi and trying to process these growing feelings for Capone, I didn’t know if I was coming or going at this point.
Last night with Capone was the most peaceful night I’d had since Gabi was snatched. It only lasted for a few hours, but I was grateful to feel something other than misery and pain.
He actually made me laugh a few times. That was something I hadn’t done since before Derek was killed. The only joy I received in life over the last few years had been from Gabi.
I felt guilty every time I looked forward to spending time with Capone. He caused me to feel things that I never felt with Derek and I was just not ready to confront those feelings.
Since I had been banned from the cave, Capone offered to show me around the clubhouse. This place had everything. They had a gym, game room, and movie room. I had already seen the common room and dining hall from previous visits but when I saw they had their very own infirmary, I was blown away.
After the tour, Capone took me to the common room where we joined a few of his brothers, Diablo, Chains, and Ink. As soon as we sat down, they began teasing us.
“Aww, look at the cute wittle couple,” Chains cooed, causing Diablo and Chains to burst into laughter.
I covered my face with my palm to hide my red cheeks. Capone and I were still working out the kinks with whatever was happening between us, so I definitely wasn’t ready to have this conversation with strangers.
“Zip it, Chains, before I do it for you,” Capone warned with a chuckle.
“Geez. You hear this, D?” Chains asked as he turned his nose up. “He just threatened us left and right behind his woman.”
“What?” I sat up in confusion.
“Oh, you don’t know. Your man sent a text to every brother the day he laid eyes on you. Let's just say there were promises of boots to assess if any of us tried anything with you.”
My mouth dropped open as I stared at Capone. He didn’t seem the least bit shamed or embarrassed as he wore a cocky smirk. Capone appeared to be completely unapologetic.
“Capone, I can't believe you did that,” I said.
“I don’t know why. I told you I knew you were special the moment I laid eyes on you. I couldn’t take the chance of one of the knuckleheads trying something.”
As I sat there, I reminisced on my first time walking into the clubhouse and it dawned on me. “Oh my God! That’s why all your brothers were staring at me!” I shrieked.
The guys found that hilarious and broke out in laughter again. Before anyone could say anything, the side door in the common room opened and in walked three guys, each holding hands with a woman.
“This placed is being taken over by couples.” Chains fake gagged. Even with his teasing, he, as well as Diablo and Ink, got up to let the women take a seat while they moved over to the bar.
“Shut it, Chains. Just because you have to resort to these women who have vaginas larger than a grapefruit doesn’t mean you have to take your frustrations out on the rest of us,” the woman with beautiful chocolate skin said.
Chains slapped his hand to his chest feigning hurt as the room roared with laughter. “Damn, Bianca, I was just joking.” He pouted.
Capone sat forward and grabbed my hand. “Everybody, I want you to meet Giovanna. Giovanna this is Blade and his Ol’ Lady, Bianca, Thor and his Ol’ Lady, Madison, and Big Red and his Ol’ Lady, Alice.”
“Nice to meet you all.” I gave a small smile and waved as I observed everyone. The men around sure had been busy. Every single one of these ladies was pregnant.
Everyone was so down-to-earth as they began chatting with me. The women more than the men, but it felt good to mingle with a group of women who didn’t seem the least bit catty.
While we were talking, Bianca groaned and rubbed her large belly. “Hungry?” Blade questioned her. When she nodded, he got up with no hesitation and headed to the kitchen.
“How many weeks do you have left?” I asked her.
“Four. I’m so ready to get this little boy out of me,” Bianca answered.
“I bet. You look ready to pop,” Capone said, smiling at her.
Bianca’s eyes filled with tears, wiping the smile off his face. Thor and Big Red looked at him like he had lost his mind, and I did the same. Madison and Alice were frowning at Capone like they wanted to rip his head off.
Capone sat with a perplexed expression, when Bianca soft cries turned to sobs. Blade came rushing out of the kitchen with a sandwich in his hand. He sat the plate on the table and palmed Bianca’s face.
“What’s wrong, Coco? Is it the baby?” He looked her over with a worry in his eyes.
Bianca shook her head frantically while wiping her tears with the back of her hands. “No. C-Ca-Capone called me fat,” she wailed.
“What?!” Capone and Blade shouted in unison as they shot to their feet.
“I did no such thing,” Capone denied with wide eyes.
“Yes, you did. We heard you.” Madison backed up Bianca, glaring at Capone.
I shook my head, smirking. My, poor, poor man. It’s clear he’d never had to deal with a pregnant woman before. Rule number one is you never comment about her weight. I didn’t care for whatever reason. You acted like she had the body of a supermodel and kept your mouth closed.
Wait, did I just call Capone my man?
“I never called her fat.” Capone continued to defend himself.
“Well, what did you say?” Blade narrowed his eyes.
“I just said she looked ready to pop.”
Thor looked at Capone in disbelief. “My God, did you really just repeat it?” he groaned.
Blade gritted his teeth, staring Capone down.
“See! I knew I looked like a fuckin’ whale!” Bianca cried out.
Capone looked around the room, taken aback. He turned to Chains, Ink, and Diablo. All they could offer him was a shake of the head. He turned back to Bianca with apologetic eyes.
“Bianca, I swear I didn’t mean to offend you. I didn’t mean to make you cry,” Capone pleaded.
“But you still think I’m fat. You don’t have to remind me, Capone. I see it every day in the mirror!” she snapped with angry tears running down her face.
“Bianca, you are not fat. Just pleasantly plump,” he stupidly said.
“What?!” she shrieked. “Oh God, it’s worse than I thought. H-how do you even want to have sex with me?”
Blade looked like he was ready to kill Capone who sat there in disbelief of what was happening. Blade turned his attention to Bianca and gripped her chin. “Stop that. You’re fuckin’ beautiful and as soon as you eat this sandwich, and I finish kicking Capone’s ass, I’ll take you home and show you.”
He pressed his lips to hers, silencing her cries.
I had to look away from the intimate yet sweet moment, as his tongue slipped into her mouth.
Anything Capone said was no longer on Bianca’s mind as she pulled away from the kiss, smiling from ear to ear.
She grabbed her sandwich, happily biting into it.
Blade then turned his attention to Capone. Capone threw his hands up in surrender. Before either of them could utter a word, Cara came into the room. When her eyes landed on me, my heart dropped. I knew whatever she was about to tell me wasn’t good.
CAPONE
Cara had perfect timing. I was more than ready when she told us to follow her to the cave.
I knew Blade was ready to rip my head off for upsetting Bianca.
I didn’t mean any harm by what I had said, but apparently that didn’t matter.
I knew the guys were always telling us how moody their women were now that they were pregnant, but damn.
They probably had to walk around on eggshells, watching every little thing they said.
Needless to say, my lesson had been learned.
Giovanna hadn’t even allowed us to fully enter the cave before she faced Cara and Sara. “Just tell me. Rip it off like a band aid. I can handle it.” Tears brimmed her eyes. She looked devastated, like she was trying to mentally prepare herself for the worst-case scenario.
Cara took a deep breath and closed her eyes as if she didn’t want to look Giovanna in the eyes. I wrapped Giovanna in my arms. I could feel her body tremble.
“Derek was having an affair.”
“For how long?” She didn’t seem surprised by the information. My guess was she had probably suspected it. A woman’s intuition would tell it every time.
“According to the text in that phone, four years.”
“And you think this woman took my baby?”
“It's very possible. From the surveillance, we know Gabi knew her kidnapper and the text in Derek’s secret phone let us know Gabi had been around his mistress on a consistent basis.”
My mouth dropped open. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. So, not only was he cheating on her, but he brought their child around his other woman. That was the lowest and grimiest thing I had ever heard.
“What else did you find?” Giovanna asked through clenched teeth. I knew the trembles I felt were no longer from hurt, but anger.
“Not only did his family know about the affair, but his mother was the one who set it up. Every weekend Derek claimed to be out of town and his parents would pick Gabi up, he was really at his mistress’s home…with Gabi.”
