Chapter Twenty-Five
CAPONE
“ W hat do you think it is she found?” Giovanna asked as she paced a hole into the floor of my office.
Cara had called early this morning while we were having breakfast and told us she finally had some dirt on Derek’s parents.
I agreed to bring Giovanna with me. Since it was such short notice, we had Gabi as well.
She was currently distracted, sitting on the sofa in my office with her coloring book and crayons.
I was just as antsy as Giovanna. Cara had been working on this for some time now. The more time that passed, the more I started to get worried she wouldn’t find anything.
If Derek’s parents did come back squeaky clean, it would be nothing to take it to court.
But who wanted to have a long, drawn-out custody battle when they could avoid it?
Plus, I didn’t want the added stress on my woman.
The bakery was enough. She was in a happy place, and I wanted it to stay that way.
She hadn’t heard from Whitney and Dennis since they declared they were taking her to court for full custody.
I didn’t understand those people, not one damn bit.
Giovanna was a great mother. Their only concern should have been Gabi, but they were too worried about Giovanna moving on, even though their son was cheating on her throughout their entire marriage with their help.
“I don’t know, Sugar, but calm down. I’m sure everything will be just fine.”
Giovanna opened her mouth to say something, but a knock on my door cut her off. After I shouted come in, Cara walked through the door, followed by Sara. They gave us a small smile before turning to Gabi.
“Hey, Gabi girl,” Sara cooed.
Ever since the other night at dinner when Hannah called Gabi that name, everyone had been referring to her as that. Gabi lit up every time.
“Hi,” she said with a bright smile.
Sara squatted down so she was face-to-face with Gabi. “I heard from a little birdy that you’re an excellent helper with the physical exams.”
Gabi bobbed her head vigorously. “I am!” she agreed excitedly.
“Well, I’m on my way to the gym. You think you could come help me out?”
Gabi whipped her head to us before Sara could finish her entire sentence. Giovanna laughed and nodded her head. “Make sure you listen to everything Ms. Sara says.”
“Okay. Bye, Mommy. Bye, Pony.” She hopped off the couch, grabbed Sara’s hand, and let her lead them away.
As soon as they were gone, I got up from my desk chair and led Giovanna to the couch. Cara grabbed one of the chairs in front of my desk and brought it over, sitting right across from us.
Cara placed the file on the coffee table between us. When Giovanna made a move to open it, Cara placed her hand on top of it. “Take a breath. Because I promise you, this is about to blow your mind.”
Giovanna and I locked eyes for a moment before I flipped the file open. As soon as I saw the first photo, my jaw hit the floor. “No fuckin’ way!” I shouted.
Giovanna sat next to me in a state of shock, disbelief, and disgust. “Wow. I did not see this coming.”
Cara snickered, shaking her head. “Talk about a plot twist.”
“How in the hell did you get these?” I questioned her.
“I have a guy I used to work with before I came here. He’s a damn good PI. If he’s on your trail, you’ll never know it.”
Giovanna flipped through the photos, her face turning up at each one. “Nicole should be ashamed of herself. How is she with Danny, smiling in Whitney’s face, all while sleeping with Dennis?”
Yup. You read that right. It seems Nicole just loved being with other women’s men. But to sleep with your boyfriend’s father?
That was a new low.
Cara had about twenty different photos in this file.
In some of the photos, Dennis and Nicole had on different clothing, meeting up at various motels, proving that this wasn’t a onetime thing.
This was an entire affair. To make matters worse, they wouldn’t even wait until they made it into the room before tonguing each other down.
Dennis was throwing a lot of stones from a glass house.
How in the world could he have so much to say about Giovanna while being this scandalous is beyond me. I wouldn’t say I was shocked that Dennis was cheating. I was shocked about who he was cheating with.
It was clear he raised both of his sons to be cheaters. But I wondered how Danny would feel, knowing his daddy was sending his women home every other night, after having his way with her. While this might cause some family drama, it did nothing to prove he or Whitney was unfit to care for Gabi.
“How is this going to help Giovanna win the custody battle though?” I asked.
“They won’t go to court. Now, I have a dummy phone in my pocket, and it’s untraceable. Call Dennis up, send him these photos, and demand that he get his wife to drop the case.”
Giovanna nibbled on her lip, twisting her thumbs. “Do you really think that will work? What if he tries to file a suit, saying we were blackmailing him?”
“One, that’s what the dummy phone is for.
He can’t trace this back to us. Two, I guarantee you, Dennis is going to figure out a way to get Whitney to drop the case.
While I was looking into Whitney and Dennis, I found out Dennis is gearing up to run for Senate.
He’s had a very successful career as District Attorney, and now he’s trying to move on up.
He already has his campaign set to go. He just has to make the announcement.
Something like this leaking to the public would ruin him before it even started. ”
Giovanna stared at Cara in amazement. Me? I was used to this at this point. I’d watched her and Sara find every skeleton hidden in someone’s closet for over four years now. Still, it never got old witnessing them in action.
“And you’re okay holding on to these images? This would be the very thing to knock Nicole off her high horse,” Giovanna said as she closed the file.
“I don’t care to tear Nicole down. Now, am I going to beat her ass the next time I see her?
Absolutely. She spoke badly about my children, and that won’t go unanswered.
But I’ve come to learn Nicole is just miserable.
Exposing her would do absolutely nothing to her.
She’ll just move on until she finds her next victim. ”
Cara stood and placed the dummy phone on the table. Giovanna followed suit and brought Cara into a tight hug. A tear trailed down her cheek before she quickly swiped it away.
I knew this was like a weight lifted off her chest. Even though she was standing up to Whitney by not bending to her commands, in the back of her head, she worried if she was making a mistake. Now she knew she had something on Dennis that would keep her ex-in-laws in line.
“I don’t know how I can repay you and Sara. You found my baby, solved her father’s murder, and now you’re saving me from having to fight for custody. Thank you just doesn’t seem like enough.”
“No thanks needed. Just an endless supply of honeybuns and we’re square.” Giovanna threw her head back, laughing as Cara made her way out of the office.
I picked up the phone, staring at Giovanna. “Do you want to make the call?”
“Actually, I don’t. You’ve shown me time and time again we’re safe with you, so I’ll let you handle this.”
Standing up, I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her in for a kiss.
The feeling swarming in my chest made me beam with pride.
To hear how confident she was, knowing that I would always protect her and Gabi, was all I’d ever wanted.
It took us some time to get here, but it was worth every moment of fighting I had to do.
Giovanna pulled me from my thoughts when she sucked my lip into her mouth, biting it. I groaned, throwing the phone down on the couch, and plunged my tongue into her mouth. She moaned, rubbing her body against mine. My hands squeezed her round ass before I broke the kiss.
“Alright, woman. You have interviews in an hour. Unless you want to conduct those looking thoroughly fucked, I suggest you stop while you’re ahead.
” She giggled before pecking my lips a few more times.
“And leave Gabi. I know you said you would set her up in the lounge area while you did the interviews, but I won’t be here much longer. ”
Giovanna squinted her eyes and pointed a finger at me. “Okay, but there better not be any more pets added to the roster, Luca. Harley and Davidson have already chewed up three of my favorite pairs of shoes.”
I scoffed at the thought. “Trust me, baby. I learned my lesson. Did you forget those little shits chewed up my five-hundred-dollar pair of biker boots?”
Giovanna chuckled with a smirk. “That’s what you get for buying the demon brothers.” She grabbed her purse off my desk and kissed me once more. “Okay, honey, I’ll see you at home later. I love you.”
Hearing her say that never got old. “I love you, too, Sugar.”
Once she was gone, I grabbed the phone and sat at my desk. After taking pictures of the photos, I texted a few to Dennis. I waited a few minutes before I dialed his number.
“Who is this? What do you want?” he asked in panic as soon as he answered.
“You don’t talk. You listen. Understand?”
“Y-yes,” he stuttered.
“Now, that custody battle you have against Giovanna, you’re going to drop that. Immediately.”
“L-look, it’s not that simple. My wife is hell-bent on gaining custody of Gabrielle. I didn’t want to pursue this from the beginning.”
“I don’t care. Either you convince her to drop the case or be the cause of your family falling into shambles, while missing out on your opportunity to become a senator.”
I heard his breath hitch. “ H-how do I know you won’t leak this information once I do as you ask?”
His voice was laced with fear. Well, it was a little too late for that. He should have thought about this before he started cheating on his wife, let alone with his daughter-in-law.
“I have no reason to come for you unless you come for my girls. You have forty-eight hours to get this done. If you don’t, I will make sure every news station in Washington gets these photos.”
“I will get her to drop the case. You have my word. But can you tell Giovanna I’m sorry? For everything.”
I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it like it had shit on it. He could take his fake-ass apology and shove it up his ass. This man wasn’t sorry. He just knew we had him by the balls, and now he wanted to try and play nice. I wasn’t going for it.
“Get it done. Time is ticking.” I hung up the phone, not giving him a chance to say anything else.
I hoped he could get Whitney to drop the case. If not, she was opening up a can of worms I’m sure she wasn’t ready to deal with. Taking this route was just the easy way out. If we did end up going to court, I would stop at nothing to ensure Gabi remained with Giovanna.
When it came down to it, there was absolutely nothing I wouldn’t do to protect my girls.
