Chapter Twenty-Eight
GIOVANNA
“ O kay, you two, I really need you to choose your favorite cupcake,” I said sternly to Levi and Wyatt.
They had been assigned to follow me whenever I wasn’t at home with Capone. I had no objections to the matter. After nearly being run off the road, I wasn’t about to chance running into the same fate.
For the past few days, these two had been exceedingly helpful.
They were my taste testers and critics. I was having such a hard time narrowing down the options for my final menu.
Levi and Wyatt were just the thing I needed to make some final decisions.
Over the past few days, we had been through cookies, cakes, Danishes, and now cupcakes.
I would lay out at least eight different options, and they would choose their favorite three.
So far, our little system had been working, but today, Levi and Wyatt were staring at these cupcakes as if I had asked them to solve the great wonders of the world.
My grand opening was just three weeks away. Although I was nervous, I was more excited. My mom and siblings were going to fly down. I couldn’t wait to show them around town to show them the little town Gabi and I had fallen in love with.
I was also happy my mom would be getting some much-needed time away from home.
My father had been a pain in the ass for her.
He wasn’t giving up easily. He thought he could strong-arm her out of her home by cutting off all her credit cards.
When that didn’t work, he went into guilt-tripping her, claiming she was breaking up the family.
The irony!
He had done that long before Mom ever did. Luckily, Mom wasn’t easily swayed. She stood firm and filed for divorce. Now he spent his days popping up at my sisters’ apartment, begging her to talk. But her mind was made up. She wanted nothing to do with my father.
“This one is really hard though, G,” Levi whined, breaking through my thoughts.
“Like, seriously. I have never heard of a Maple bacon cinnabun cupcake until now. Honestly, I didn’t even think bacon and cupcakes could go together, but this is fuckin’ delicious,” Wyatt mumbled before taking a bite.
I giggled, appreciating the praise. This feeling never got old. All the years I spent dreaming of this moment, it sometimes felt unreal now that it was finally here.
“You two aren’t supposed to be indecisive. That’s my job.”
“Says who?” Levi raised a brow. “Plus, you still have to make that one cupcake. What was it you called it? A uh… white chocolate macadamia cupcake with hazelnut something.”
I threw my head back with laughter. “You mean the white chocolate macadamia cupcake with hazelnut chocolate filling topped with vanilla buttercream icing?”
I swear it looked as if a little drool spilled from the corner of his mouth. “Yeah. That’s the one.”
“I still need to get a few ingredients from the store for that one.”
Levi stood to his feet. “Make a list. I’ll run to the store and get it.”
“Seriously?” I tittered.
“Yes. You can’t throw those kinds of options out there and not follow through. List. Now.”
I went into the office, grabbed a piece of paper, and a pen. After I made the list, I handed it over to Levi.
“Okay, I’ll be right back. I’ll take the key and lock up on my way out.”
Wyatt gave him a firm nod as he left. Those two had been taking their job of keeping me safe seriously. They didn’t even allow me to drive. Over the time I had been around them, we had gotten close.
Levi had been prospecting with the club for almost two years, and his time was coming to an end. He was either going to be patched in or banned from the club. Wyatt, on the other hand, was the newest prospect. He had been incarcerated for over ten years for involuntary manslaughter.
When he told me his story, I thought it was complete bullshit that he served a single day behind bars.
His baby sister was raped at a frat party.
He showed up looking for her after she called and told him she thought she had been drugged.
When he got there, he walked in on the guys in the act.
Doing what any big brother would do, he beat the living shit out of them.
One of the guys slipped into a coma and later died from complications. They gave Wyatt life, but all of his sister’s rapists walked free. The Romanos fought for Wyatt’s freedom from the time he was sentenced. Seven months ago, they finally succeeded and got his freedom back.
“I guess I’ll clean up and take out the trash until Levi gets back.”
“Nice try. I’ll help you clean up, and I’ll take out the trash.”
“Fair enough.”
Once all the trash was lined up by the back door, Wyatt grabbed the bags and took them out. I busied myself in the kitchen, prepping and setting up to make another batch of cupcakes. As I was lining the counter with pans, I heard the back door slam.
“Wyatt?” I called out.
Silence.
An eerie feeling settled over me. Something felt off. Call it a gut feeling, but something was definitely wrong. Before I could make a move, the kitchen door swung open, and all my fears stood before me.
Jamie. And she had a gun trained on me.
“W-what are y-yo-you doing?” I stuttered.
“Shut up!” she gritted. “We’re going to take a ride. Let’s go.”
“Jamie... look, you don’t?—”
My words were cut off when she pulled the trigger. The bullet lodged in the wall beside me. “I said. Lets. GO!” she shouted.
My feet moved before I could comprehend what was going on. I didn’t want to take the chance of her actually shooting me out of frustration. Once I made it around the counter, she grabbed the back of my shirt and ushered me out the back door.
Wyatt was sprawled out on the ground with a deep gash on his forehead.
“Wyatt!” I cried as I tried to kneel and help him.
Jamie violently shook me. “Nu-uh! Let’s go!”
She practically had to drag me away as I fought to get to Wyatt. The slam of the gun against the back of my head ceased my fight. Everything started spinning. I was struggling to move my legs. That didn’t seem to deter Jamie as she seemingly had the strength of three men.
She led me to the same SUV that ran me off the road. The front bumper had noticeable damage.
“Now, I’m going to need you to take a little nap for our little ride.”
Before I could protest, I felt a stinging pain in my neck, and the world as I knew it went black.
“This is it, Jamie. Don’t fuck it up. All we have to do is get rid of her, and Capone is ours.”
I stirred awake at the sound of Jamie’s rambling. I kept my breathing pattern normal. I didn’t need her knowing I was awake.
“It’s all her fault. He was mine. Mine!”
I could hear her footsteps right in front of me.
She was pacing the floor. Something was clearly wrong with this girl.
This was beyond obsession at this point.
She was convincing herself that I was the problem.
Being married to an agent, I learned how most scenarios played out.
In this situation, I knew it would only be a matter of time before Jamie killed me.
The only hope I had was the tracker bracelet I had on my wrist.
Capone gave this to me the night Jamie tried running me off the road.
I didn’t know how long I’d been out, but surely Levi had returned to the bakery by now to discover what had happened.
The only problem was where exactly was I and how long it would take for Capone to get to me?
I could be long gone by the time he found me.
“Ugh, why is she still sleeping?” I heard Jamie ask.
My body stiffened unintentionally.
Jamie laughed deviously. “Playing possum, are we?”
The jig was up. I blinked my eyes before staring up at her. I didn’t say a word. The crazed look in her eyes let me know this girl was a loose cannon. Anything little thing could make her pull the trigger.
I took the time to look around and noticed we were in a barn. It looked like it was abandoned, but clearly Jamie had been living in this dump. There was a dirty mattress in the corner, littered with wrappers of food. The windows had been boarded up, and there was only one way in and out.
“Nothing to say?” she questioned with a smirk. “It’s okay. You don’t have to say anything. After tonight, you’ll be a distant memory, and I’ll have my man back.”
“You think you’re going to get away with this?”
I knew I shouldn’t engage, but I also needed to stall her.
“I sure am. Once the sun goes down, I’m going to put a bullet in your head and bury you in the woods. Once you’re out of the picture, Capone will finally see that I am the woman for him.”
She smiled brightly, sending a chill down my spine. She meant every word.
I didn’t know where Luca was, but I hoped he was close. My life depended on it.
CAPONE
I couldn’t believe what was happening. One second, I was making amends with my father, and the next, I was hauling ass to the clubhouse.
Jamie had lost her fuckin’ mind. After attacking Wyatt from behind, she took Giovanna.
The cameras had already been installed at the bakery, so when Levi returned from the store, it didn’t take long for Cara to figure out what had happened.
My father tried pressing me for answers when I left in a rush. I didn’t have time to answer his questions. After telling him I would call when I could, I left without a backward glance.
Once I had arrived at the clubhouse, the guys were all waiting on the bikes for me. We didn’t bother with any conversation. We had Giovanna’s location and that was all that was needed.
Jamie had a forty-five-minute head start on us. She was still on the move. It looked like she was taking Giovanna deep into the country. There wasn’t much out where she was headed. That made me nervous. Being in the middle of nowhere meant no witnesses.
I had to get to Giovanna before Jamie could execute whatever crazy plan she had doctored up in her head.
