CHAPTER TWELVE
Peyton
Two months ago if you had asked me who I thought I’d be dating, I wouldn’t have said Booker Jameson. Not in a million years. He was cocky, arrogant, self-centered and smug whenever I saw him. In fact, I hated seeing him weekly, or sometimes daily, in court. Even when it wasn’t against me, I still would see him because the courthouse was our home away from home.
Even a month ago I didn’t think I would be dating Booker. Sure he was pursuing me, but I never thought I would give him another chance or that it would go beyond Sensation. I honestly didn’t think he wanted to do anything but fuck me at the club.
Apparently, I was wrong about him. He was more than the cocky attorney who drove me up the wall. He was potentially willing to risk his career for me.
But secrets always come out.
Was I really willing to risk my career for him?
Sure we had a plan, but what if? What if something happened and the wrong person found out about us before he made partner? Most attorneys couldn’t care less who was dating whom, but there are assholes in our field, and it would only take one to report us.
“I’ll call you tomorrow,” Booker had said when he dropped me off the night before. Was tomorrow really today since it was Sunday, or did he mean Monday? I was too infatuated to get a clarification, and now I was like a lovesick teenager waiting by the phone.
A knock came to my door, and my heart fluttered.Lawd. Spend a night with a hot guy and I act like a crazy person.I walked to the door, peeked through the peephole, and sighed. Not him.
“Can I help you?” I asked as I opened the door.
Lorelei pushed passed me. “Yeah, I want all the details. Don’t leave anything out.”
I threw my head back and rolled my eyes. I knew she was coming over. Just like she had the month prior, she was at my door for lunch and an interrogation. Though last time I wasn’t in such a great mood.
“Only if you brought me honey walnut shrimp,” I answered and closed the door.
“I’ve been your assistantforever. I think I know what you like to eat.”
I smiled as I walked toward the couch she was now sitting on, and watched as she pulled out Chinese takeout boxes. “And potstickers?”
“Yes. Now start talking while I dish you up.” She stood and moved to my kitchen. I watched as she went straight to the cabinet with my plates. It was safe to say she’d been over a few times in the last five or so years.
“Remember if you say a peep of what I have to tell you, I’ll tell Kenny you’re in love with him.”
She stopped walking and then rolled her eyes. Kenny was a law clerk at our firm, andhewas in love with her. He wasn’t her type at all. She went for the hunky type, and Kenny was… well, not.
“You wouldn’t.”
“I would.” I grinned.
She started to walk back to the couch again. “Whatever. You know I won’t say anything. So is he really married?”
We didn’t need to sayhisname. We both knew why I went to Sensation again.
I nodded. “Yeah, he is. For nine years now.”
Lorelei stopped scooping out shrimp and looked up at me. “Nine years?” she exclaimed.
I nodded again. “Yep.”
“Nine years,” she said again as though she couldn’t believe it. “So they go to Sensation to swing like we suspected?”
I chuckled and took my plate from her. I scooted back on my teal couch and sat cross-legged. “Kinda.”
“Kinda? What does that mean?”
“Pinky swear,” I said and stuck out my hand with my pinky finger extended. I didn’t care that we were grown ass women. Everyone knew a pinky swear was like sealing your lips and you were tonevertell anyone. In fact, according to Japan where the gesture was created, if the person told the secret then they would have to cut off their pinky. It wasthatimportant.
