“No, it’s not like that.” He took a step toward me, but it was my turn to retreat.
“Just tell me what the fuck is going on. If you want to break up with me, I’ll leave and never look back.”
“I don’t want to break up with you, but you will want to break up with me when I tell you—”
“You cheated on me?” I asked, cutting him off.
“No! God no!”
My head seemed to become lighter as though I was going to pass out and tears pricked my eyes. “I don’t understand.”
“Please, baby. Sit down.”
“Touch me,” I retorted, needing him to show me he still wanted me.
He did. He rushed to me, cupped my face and pressed his lips to mine. I melted against him, and as our mouths worked together, I realized he was slightly carrying me to the couch. He pressed his body to mine, and I fell onto the soft surface, him on top of me. It didn’t feel like a goodbye kiss, though at this point I wasn’t sure.
“Baby, I never want to stop touching you or kissing you or loving you. But something happened about an hour ago that—”
“Just tell me,” I said as he looked down into my eyes.
He sighed. “Clint knows about us.”
“What? How?”
“He said he lives in your building.”
My heart stopped again. “He does? I’ve never seen him, and when he asked me to get drinks with him, he’s didn’t mentioned it. Plus, he has a wife and a baby, but I did always get the vibe he had a thing for me.”
“Right.” Booker sat up, and so did I.
“He’s a jerk who’s made advances toward me when we’ve seen each other in court.”
“Like that day in the stairwell?”
I shuddered. “Yeah. He wasn’t taking no for an answer, but luckily you walked up the stairs and I could make my getaway.”
“I’ll kill him.”
I smiled softly for the first time since arriving. “Nothing will ever happen with that guy.”
“He clearly has it out for me, and now that I’m with you, he won’t stop. I’m sure of that.”
“He’s married and has a baby,” I said again as though that would stop a sleazeball.
“Obviously that didn’t stop him from hitting on you.”
“True,” I agreed. “So what do we do?”
Booker’s piercing blue eyes turned to me. “I don’t know. He said he already reported us to the bar.”
I sucked in a breath. This wasn’t the plan. The plan was for Booker to make partner, withdraw from the cases, and then we’d live happily ever after. Now that the bar might already know we’re an item, they still might suspend us or even take our licenses away.
I thought for a moment, trying to think of what to do. “I talked to my dad about us when I told him we were dating. He was a lawyer for twenty plus years, and a judge for ten or so beyond that. He said we should be okay if one of us withdraws.”
“That’s all he said?”
“Well, we got interrupted, but yeah.”
