Story: Free Fire Zone
She shrugged, taking a drink of her own water. “He invited us to stay with him.”
I was taking my own drink and nearly choked at the nonchalant way she said it. “He what?”
“Isn’t this what you wanted?”
“Why would I want to go stay with a hot guy? No—two hot guys—when I was just humiliated?”
“I would assume so you have someplace warm to stay for the night.” She sighed heavily. “Not that it’s not warm out. The earth is warming at a faster rate than any of us can fathom. Not to mention that with the ice caps melting, we’ll all be swimming in an ocean instead of plowing fields. And then when the super volcano under Yellowstone erupts, we’ll all be forced to kill each other to survive the volcanic winter.”
I was saved from having to answer by Brock and Steak Boy walking up to us. “Are you ready to go?” Brock asked, his eyes on Lee.
“Why not,” she said, getting up from her seat.
My eyes flickered to Steak Boy for a moment. The way he was looking at me, I could swear he was ready to devour me. I brushed asticky piece of hair behind my ear, blushing slightly at the way his eyes followed my every move.
“Are you ready to go?”
“Um…are you sure you don’t mind? It won’t be for long,” I said quickly.
“It’s fine. Although…” He rubbed his hand across the back of his neck. “I feel really weird about calling you Steak Girl. It would make me feel better if I knew your name.”
A chuckle slipped past my lips. “I’ve been calling you Steak Boy.”
His brows furrowed in dislike. “I’m a man. It should be Steak Man, if anything.”
“Right, but you called me girl.”
“Okay, then how about you call me Dash and I’ll call you…”
“Laura,” I supplied, feeling better now that I had a name to go with the face. “Is your name really Dash?”
“Luke,” he answered. “Luke Foster.”
“Is that like James. James Bond.”
His eyes laughed at me, but I found I liked it. “That’s Bond. James Bond.”
“Right, well, I’ve never actually watched one of the movies.”
His face instantly dropped. I wasn’t sure what I said, but he was looking at me now like I was insane, or at the very least, he was very worried about me.
“What? Was it something I said?”
“You’re telling me you’ve never seen a James Bond movie?”
“Is that a bad thing?”
He wrapped his arm around me, drawing me in closer. “I don’t know what you were planning to do tonight, but we’re about to have a movie marathon.”
“Um…can we do that after I get some clothes?”
The burning look he shot my way had me tingling in all the right places. He was undeniably the sexiest man I’d ever met, and that included his friend. He was handsome, but a little too…put together.
As we walked away from my destroyed home, I categorized all his features out of the corner of my eye. He was tall with short brown hair that he kept hidden under a ball cap. That only accentuated his strongjaw and blue eyes. I could have sworn I saw laugh lines around his eyes, like he was always happy. I flushed as my eyes roamed over his muscles. I remembered how his hands worked that harness up around my waist, and those words…
“Laura?”
“Hmm?” I jerked my gaze up from his biceps, spotting the twitch of his lips as he caught me staring. “Sorry, what were you saying?”
