“Yeah, you were always trash,” he sneers.
“What?” So he just called me trash? Tell me how you really feel, Linc.
“I loved you and you tore me apart. You still haven’t given a good reason for leaving me,” he hisses.
“What do you want me to tell you?”
“The fucking truth,” he yells.
“I was pregnant,” and I can hear the gasps from everyone.
“What the fuck?” Memphis yells. I was so in the moment, I forgot we were supposed to be doing a skit. Sal set me up. I fucking hate him right now. This is not how this was supposed to go.
“You were what?” Lincoln asks.
Fuck my life. I do the only thing I think of and take off. I rush down the steps and through the yard toward the forest.
I run through the trees, looking for the shortcut home. I need to go home.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Lincoln
She was pregnant? What the fuck? Her words are like a slap in the face to me. I reel back and watch her run. My whole body burns with anger at having to relive all of that, and I’m pissed Sal did that. And then to top it off, come to find out what she was hiding.
Memphis looks ready to pummel me into the ground. Fuck, I never wanted that to get out, that I slept with her on their wedding day at the church. I can see my pastor judging me. And he’s judging her. Great.
I egged her on and I fucked it all up. I should have waited until after the skit. Me and my mouth.
I can see the disappointment in some of the locals’ eyes. No, make that all the townspeople’s eyes. And I can feel Beau’s eyes bearing down on me. Same with Memphis. And the sheer look of horror on Skye’s mother’s face shreds me.
“Kara and Bobby,” Carlton calls out just to keep things rolling and I just keep walking. I need to clear my head. I need to get away.
I round the corner of the house and run into something. Not just something— I run into a fist.
“Fuck,” that hurt.
“What the hell? You fucked her on my wedding day? Before or after we were married?”
“Why do you even care?” Not good, buddy. Probably should answer the questions.
“Because she was going to be my wife. And even though our marriage didn’t work, I care about her.”
I snort. “You care about her?” I’m playing with fire now, one that will definitely put a hurt on me and leave me scarred. I should just shut up.
“Don’t start shit with me,” he’s glaring at me and if looks could kill, I should be six feet under.
“Or what, you’ll turn green?” I have no idea what I’m doing. Memphis could kill me with just one hand.
“Was the baby yours?” he asks, sitting down on the ground next to me.
“I didn’t know she was pregnant,” I admit. That is the damn truth. Her words hit me in the gut.
“Well, shit. I think this is all shit.” Yep, I agree with you there.
“You’re telling me,” I say now that he’s calmer.
“I’m sorry about sleeping with her on your wedding day. I went to her, hoping I could get the old Skye back and she would call it off.”
