Page 52 of Saving Soul
His eyes twinkled as he sat on the chair opposite. “What are you doing with these?” He picked up a photo album from the stack and flipped it open.
“Your grandfather has been feeling a little nostalgic of late, so we took a trip down memory lane this afternoon.”
Adam’s eyebrows drew closer as he reviewed the photos before him. “I’ve never seen these before.” He held up the page. “Check out my dad’s hair!”
“Oh, we didn’t get to those.” I jumped up from my seat and moved to his, perching on its arm as I peered over. “I got stuck looking at your old baby photos.”
“Hey, I was a cute kid.”
I shrugged. “Okay.”
“I was!”
“If you say so.” I enjoyed the provocation too much.
“I’ll prove it.” Adam flicked over a few more pages, only to find more photos of Liam, his wife, and a very young William. “This must be the wrong album.” As he slammed it closed, the rush of air blew out a loose photograph, and it slid across the floor. “Wait, there’s one.” He reached for the photograph that hadAdamwritten in tiny, cursive writing across the back and flipped it over to discover a tattered black-and-white photograph of a newborn baby.
I peered over his shoulder. “Aww, youwerecute.”
Adam’s forehead crinkled. “That’s not me.”
“Then who…” My words faded as realization settled over me. It was a photograph of Adam’s deceased uncle who he knew nothing about.
“It must be a mistake.”
“Yeah, it has to be.” I attempted to hide the shake in my voice with a laugh. “Because that baby is way cuter than you ever were.”
With a growl, Adam tore me off the arm of the chair, and I fumbled into his lap with a squeal. “Take that back,” he said, tickling my sides.
Laughter burst from my lips. “I take it back! I take it back!”
“Good.” His eyes paused on my mouth.
The swirling heat between us shocked me into reality, and I leapt off as he leaned in. “Fuck.” I stumbled back to my chair. “You can’t do that.”
“Can’t do what?” Grayson appeared in the doorway, making us both jump. Thankfully, he was reading something on his phone, completely oblivious to the incident.
My mind scrambled for an explanation. “Adam was touching the photos.”
Grayson frowned at his brother. “Don’t tell Josie. She loses her mind over shit like that.”
Adam’s gaze zeroed in on mine, ignoring Grayson. “Maybe thephotoswanted to be touched.”
Heat filled my cheeks, but Grayson was too distracted to notice. He’d spotted the photo albums on the coffee table and was already rummaging through them.
“I haven’t seen these in years.” He picked one up and moved to the spare armchair.
“There are some there I’ve never seen.”
“You’ve already gone through them?” Grayson looked up at his brother. “How early did you arrive?”
“Adam’s been here all week,” I said when he grew silent.
“What?” Grayson’s jaw slackened. “All week? What about the Ferguson deal?”
Adam sighed. “It’s under control.”
“Adam…” The warning in Grayson’s tone was evident.
